Oil Viscosity ?
I just change the oil in my Old 1995 chev. truck. I had 2 qts of 20-50W & 2 qts of 10-30w. Mixed both of them together in the crankcase, What nominal weight oil do I now have? 15-40W? I always wondered how the different viscosities mixed. Any answers? Just couldn't dispose of the 20-50w. w/o using it. Leftover from the 4 cyl.

Re: Oil Viscosity ?
Hi Kelly,
I did an internet search on mixing viscosity and there are a lot of different opinions. I didn't find anything definite, but maybe you can with a little time spent. Dan B |

Re: Oil Viscosity ?
Thanks for reply and interest Dan. The Pub looked to be down on posts and I thought maybe this would generate some traffic. I suspect the final product is a mixture of the properties of 2 viscosities. the final results are not a major concern since they are all ready completed. Appears the oil pressure is up a little when cold, but drops to normal under operating conditions. this seems to indicated the oil this thicker at first than the 5-30W. used earlier, but not up to the 20-50W .
Thanks and have a great day! |

Re: Oil Viscosity ?
I've heard that oil can be thinned with a couple of tablespoons of Dickle.......however, the final concoction has explosive qualities, so should not be used regularly in an FoMoCo engine.
Hope it gets you safely to Pete's this weekend. |

Re: Oil Viscosity ?
Thanks for well wishes. Have a safe trip to The Glen. Dickel has lubricating quality, but does not mix too well with petroleum. It makes the tongue loose, but the tale tight. Plan to carry 2 fresh watermelons pick this AM. may plug them and add PGA. Should be a whale of a GOOD TIME!
