Charter Menbers

I just noticed that Curtis has posted reports for all of the conventions going back to 1997 which I'm guessing was the first one.

In looking at the attendees it struck me that last summer might possibly have been the first time ever that we did not have one of the original dozen attendees present. Is this correct? Can we do anything to remedy that this summer? I think we should do whatever we can to encourage our original founders to return to the fold so to speak, after all where would we be without them? Thanks all.

Jim

1997 was the first year of the V8 Meets. It's the only one I have have missed. The only reason I missed it was I learned of it two months after it had already happened, otherwise I would have been there.

That list does not reflect everyone present in 1997. I know that Jack Renaud was there & I'm pretty sure Jim Stuart was, as well. There is a group pic somewhere.

Those were some of the first twenty or so pages of this site I ever worked-on and uploaded... over 2.5 years ago! Those five buttons across the top of the page have been pull-down menus since day one. ("Meetings" used to be in the center, before there was a message board. Back then, the left-most button took you to the home page.)

quote: "That list does not reflect everyone present in 1997. I know that Jack Renaud was there"

I've just added Jack's name, and I'll happily make any other updates that come on good authority. (Shouldn't be hard to verify Jim's attendence!) Let me know if you guys spot any other errors/omissions. I missed the first one and 1999 through 2005.

Note: the 1997 page starts with this sentence "A more complete description of this event is coming soon." - I've just been waiting for someone to send me some details! Photos would be awesome.

I can't believe no one has an attendee list for the 2005 meet! Someone should be able to help me with that... at least with something from memory. I can only recognize some of the cars in the photos.

I was at Champaign while the car was down for paint and repower, it was the first knowledge I had of the group, and it wasn't until '02 that I came back and brought the car, it was just that I felt bad describing the car when I didn't have anything to back up what I was saying. I've got a few shots of the host hotel you might like. Mostly with my car in them.

I think I made every meet after that, though somehow Grand Rapids '02 and '04 have sort of melted together to where I'm not even sure about '04. The car's been down for rewire, for axle replacement, and for head gaskets. all in about that time period but I couldn't imagine I'd have missed going, regardless. My memory sure isn't what it used to be, and it never was all that great. Was Jack there last summer?

JIm:

Yes, you are correct! I noted the same thing this summer...

The absence of Jack, Kurt, Jim, and Dan meant that our most "long-time" attendees (other than Carl) were absent.

I also missed the first one because I'd heard about it post factum. I've then only missed '04 and '05. :-)

I first met "Jack, Kurt, Jim, and Dan" in Annapolis, MD in '98. I believe last year was the first absence by any of them since then.

I also first met Curtis, Max (& his friend Tim Duhamel), Martyn Harvey, Dale Spooner, Bernie Posey, Dave Michel, & of course, Glen Towery & Ian Pender at the 1998 MG V8 Meet.

1998 was a banner year for rookies that are now "long-time attendees.

I may be incorrect about Jim Stuart in 1997.

I dug out my old back issues of the MG V8 Newsletter. Volume V, Issue 2 (August 1997) covers the first annual MG V8 event hosted by Robin Weatherall. There in the middle of the rather dark, black & white pic is Jack Renaud on the front row next to Kurt Schley. I can only recognize about six of the attendees. I do not see Jim Stuart. There are 17 people in the pic & Diane Schley is credited as taking the photo.

Ken Bierman is mentioned in the article as showing his under-construction MGB V8. So, he was there, as well.

I will look...but I've had a computer crash since then...hopefully the file was salvaged.

I missed out on 1997 and 1998 (although I was in the area and knew about them....the bug had not yet infected me!); I hosted the 1999 in Champaign, IL; I attended 2000 (Cleveland), 2001 (Sebring), 2002 (Grand Rapids), 2003 (Townsend), 2004 (Grand Rapids), 2006 (Townsend), and 2008 (Port Washington). I co-hosted 2005 (Terre Haute); I missed 2007 (Cleveland). Ho0pefully, I will be in Raleigh./Durham....and will again be co-hosting 2010 (Indianapolis)

No printout? Check in your file cabinet under British V8 or "The Driving Experience of 2005". :)

Some years the attendees were given a printout with everyone's name & address. I found a couple of them, but we didn't get one in '05.

I've added the participant list to the 2005 page. Let me know if you can help me fill in any additions. Specifically, I tried to match up people to cars, and there were a few I didn't know.

Here's the direct link: 2005 BritishV8 Meet

My neighbor Gary Hendron was also there. He owns a TR-6 (in restoration) and was considering a SBC at the time.

Okay, I added Gary's name.

Who brought this red MGA racecar?
http://www.britishv8.org/Photos/V82005/IM000178.jpg
How about the orange MGB shown in the same photo?

Did they attend the meet, or were they just there at the drag races.

I only saw the red MGA at the dragstrip.

Dan Masters drove up in an S.O.B. (Toyota RAV4) with his grandson Nikko navigating.

Richard Wright's Healey was SBC powered. I think a 350.

Ken Biermann drove his stock MGB, shown here:

Curtis, I see that Graeme and my name are on the attendees list for the 2005 Meet. Although I like seeing our names on the list - we were there in spirit only!!! Unfortunately, due to Graeme having his appendix removed that week we were unable to be there.

Okay, I've made the updates above to the 2005 participant list.

A few lingering mysteries:

Anyone remember who brought this car?
http://www.britishv8.org/Photos/V82005/IM000055.jpg

How about this one?
http://www.britishv8.org/Photos/V82005/IM000056.jpg
(is it the same car as above?)

This one?
http://www.britishv8.org/Photos/V82005/IM000077.jpg

I don't recognize either of the MG's in this shot:

Seems to me that the guy in the red mga was a local Terre Haute fellow who heard about the meet and dropped by to participate...I think he actually took part at the drag races at Wabash Vallley. I believe he had a modified A/B engine in there. Could the black mgb be Denny Williiams from Hamilton Ohio. Just thinking out loud...

That was my hunch, but I wanted to hear someone else say it.

Okay, I've just uploaded the text from Kurt's original write-up about the 1997 meet.

Check it out!

The article included this photo:

I can identify Kurt, Jack, and Glen... can you guys help me fill in the rest of the gang from left-to-right?
(There's a list of participants in the article.) I'll use that to caption the photo when we have them all.

Robin Weatherall (kinda started this 'organization'/movement here in the States in the early '90s) is on the bottom row right end (cap on backwards). Robin was an owner of The MG Centre ins St.Louis with Jack jenkins and Ken Costello.

Don Peery (strfiped shirt) is standing immediately behind Robin in the next rwo. Don owns a favtory MGB/GT V8 and is from Oklahoma.

Sorry,.but I cannot positively identify anyone else (alothough it "looks" like Dave Mikel standing to the right of the lady in the dress.
