Car Music - What's Your Favorite?
Posted by: Scott68B

I was working on my car about 5:30 AM on Sunday listening to some music when Deep Purple's Highway Star came on....really enjoyed it. It reminded me of my youth! :) Looked up the lyrics....here's a quote:
Quote:
I love it, I need it, I seed it
Eight cylinders all mine
Alright hold tight I'm a highway star

Gets the blood moving! Anyone else have a favorite car song they want to share?

"My MGB GT she's a Runner Now" By Richard Thompson (Mirror Blue" album)

Lyrics to Mgb-gt
Oh I've got a little car and she might go far
She's the mistress of my heart now
She's a '65 with an overdrive
And I fixed her in every part now
Two in the front and two in the back
110 on the old Hog's Back
My MGB-GT, she's a runner now
MGB-GT
Oh my MGB-GT, she's a runner now

Oh I welded the sills and the old floor pan
Cut the rust with the torch and the hacksaw
Took the Rostyles off, put the spoked wheels on
Got a brand new Salisbury axle
When I come to town the girls all smile
They say "Here's the man with the retro style"
My MGB-GT, she's a runner now
MGB-GT
Oh my MGB-GT, she's a runner now

Lockheed discs and twin SUs
Original chrome on the grille now
She looks like a dream in her racing green
Competition's standing still now
I sprayed up her body, I strenghtened the frame
I stripped her right down and I built her up again

Now an Alpine's fine if you've got the time
And a Healey'll set you back some
And a TR4 costs a little bit more
But it don't have the same attraction
Hard top handy, in case of the weather
I don't care if it rains forever
In my MGB-GT, she's a runner now
MGB-GT
In my MGB-GT, she's a runner now
MGB-GT
In my MGB-GT, she's a runner now

There are lots of great car songs. Some will get you a speeding ticket if you get lost in the music. :)

Here's a bit obscure one that some of y'all may not be familiar with.

Queen - I'm in Love With My Car

The machine of a dream, such a clean machine
With the pistons a pumpin', and the hubcaps all gleam
When I'm holding your wheel
All I hear is your gear
With my hand on your grease gun
Mm it's like a disease son
I'm in love with my car, gotta feel for my automobile
Get a grip on my boy racer rollbar
Such a thrill when your radials squeal

Told my girl I'll have to forget her
Rather buy me a new carburettor
So she made tracks saying this is the end now
Cars don't talk back they're just four wheeled friends now

When I'm holding your wheel
All I hear is your gear
When I'm cruisin' in overdrive
Don't have to listen to no run of the mill talk jive

I'm in love with my car (love with my car), gotta feel for my automobile
I'm in love with my car (love with my car), string back gloves in my automolove

Geesh! The newest song mentioned so far (Richard Thompson's "MGB GT") is already twenty years old. The average song here must be ~20 years older than that. Please allow me to turn you on to a fantastic car song from THIS century. This song answers the question: "Where will Curtis' next car come from?"

(The cool guitar stuff starts at about 3:12 and builds...)

That's even better than Lawrence Welk. Just.

Some of mine:

Rip it up - Little Richard
Great Balls of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis
Maybelline - Chuck Berry
Don't let Go - Roy Hamilton
Hound Dog - Big Mama Thorten

And from a later era:
Jazz Samba - Stan Getz & Charlie Bird
Tideline - Daryl Anger & Barbara Higby

I could go on, but I have to include a favorite road tune from an earlier era: Beethoven's Ninth - I would lose my license if I listened to that very often. When the chorus hits their stride, I usually have the pedal to the metal.

Day Of The Eagle - Robin Trower

Carl,

I've got that album! Probably haven't listened to it in over 20 yrs. Forgot how good it is.

Since Hendrix was such an influence on Trower, how about this one?

Stone Free - Jimi Hendrix

Dan M.,

Great tunes! I took the liberty of putting links to the songs here. Hope you don't mind?

I especially liked Don't let Go and Hound Dog. Elvis' Hound Dog sort of missed the point, didn't it? That song was meant to be sung by a woman.

Okay, maybe not quite a driving song...or maybe so. Here's a killer recent song (2009) you've not heard by a very talented lady you've never heard of. ;)
