The best one of all, is the rumbling sound of a V8 echoing off the walls of a twisty canyon road! :-)

I figure there are subclasses of "car music": (a) songs that remind you of your car, (b) songs for working on your car, (c) songs for cruising, (d) songs for long road trips, etc. - Driving clear across the country for BritishV8 2009, I played "Return of the Grievous Angel", "Six Days on the Road" and "Willin' over and over and over. Definitely three favorite road songs!

---

Now... here's a relatively recent song by a talented young lady you've probably never heard of, but with car references and raw feminine sexual energy: ZZ Ward performing "Move Like You Stole It". And another favorite along somewhat similar lines: Chrissie Hynde and Co (aka The Pretenders) performing "Night in My Veins".

Little Feat anyone?

How about a song about trying to get out out of a speeding ticket.

Roadhouse Blues, The Doors! "Keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel"!
I just had to listen just now - not as loud as I would like, my Mrs. is home.

This quote from Phil reminded me of driving the Roadmaster on I-77 from VA to WVA. It sounded so good I looped around and went through the tunnel two more times.

Awhile back, I was asked what the "British V8" on my t-shirt was about. I described us as a bunch of elderly teenagers.

This is a great thread. Some very fine music indeed!

---

Old timers may know this next suggestion as a Bo Diddley song, but I prefer Lonesome George's version:

The video reminded me of my first rock concert: George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers at the old Warner Theater in downtown DC. (Such a great venue!) It was Thanksgiving weekend, and The Destroyers were on their epic and now legendary "Fifty states in fifty days" tour. Obviously, DC isn't a state - earlier that same day they had played Baltimore, and then they played DC, starting real late and playing loud and strong right through the wee hours of the morning. (More about it here.)

Two more favorites for cruising in the early 1980s.

Rush - Red Barchetta

Van Halen - Panama

(When Carl mentioned Lonesome Dave, I didn't have a clue who he meant. I thought of Diamond Dave!)
