message board "search" function
Posted by: Moderator

The message board software came with its own "search" function...

(To get to it, you click the word "Search" in the "Goto" line above.)

Do you care if I remove it?

I think it's obsolete, and that the Google search box (at page top) simply works better.

The change will take two seconds, and will make the board marginally more "streamlined".

Okay, that's all the buy-in I need to hear.

We'll still have the "Google" search box at the top of every screen.

How do I make it search the message boards only?

Right now, that's not easy to do but you CAN easily bias the search results toward message board entries by adding the word "forum" in addition to your other keyword or keyword combination. For example, enter "forum HTOB" and compare the results to what you get when you search just "HTOB". It works in a fashion (if you think to do it.)

If you think it's a big deal to be able to search JUST the message board, that's a very easy feature to add. The best way to do it is with "check boxes"... for example, if you look at the search box here: [www.britishv8.org] you'll notice that you can select a check box and thus search either BritishV8 or the whole internet. I could add another check box for searching just-the-message-board...

"I could add another check box for searching just-the-message-board..."

Well, if it's not very time consuming... ;)

There is a lot of good info in the message boards that is difficult to dredge back up.

I'm trying to find a post about the weight of an MGB differential vs 9 inch Ford. I was astounded how close they were. Can't remember where I saw it.

Btw, did you get my email last week?

I've got a lot of details to take care of first though, getting a new edition of BritishV8 rolled-out...

The old search function frustrated me nearly every time I tried to use it...

re: the weight of an MGB differential vs 9 inch Ford

Do you mean an MG open differential vs. a Ford open differential?

Or do you mean whole axles. I won't put much stock in axle weight numbers until I see them supplemented with a whole bunch of footnotes. Dan Lagrou weighed several axles for a Newsletter article once-upon-a-time and that article is in the archives, but there are obviously a lot of variables he didn't address or that weren't explicitly discussed. You can spec aftermarket "nine inch" axles with all sorts of housings, gear sets, axle shafts, differentials, brake options. The Salisbury housing itself is heavy cast iron; it wasn't designed to be lightweight.

I've uploaded a revised set of search options here: Searchable Archive Index

(You can also select "Searchable Archive" from the right-most pull-down menu on ANY page.)

From the Searchable Archive page, you can now search (a) JUST the main BritishV8 website, (b) JUST the BritishV8 message board, or (c) the whole internet.

This differs from the search box that's in the upper righthand corner of EVERY page, which will still combine search results from BOTH the main BritishV8 website and ALSO the BritishV8 message board. It's a subtle thing, but the main site and message board are actually separate; they're even hosted on two entirely different servers.

Thanks, Curtis!

That's much better.
