Kelly and I went for a little ride to a local hotel and they allowed us to enter. After the photo opp we took some roads less travelled in the general direction of the fine host hotel when suddenly the RM began making a very loud noise.

For those of you who don't know Kelly, he has a health situation which has made it very difficult for him to get around without a motorized scooter. So there we were out in the boondocks of mountain country with a mechanical problem, no cell phone signal, and a passenger with mobility restrictions, Humm what to do,,,

. Then I remembered the time a year or two earlier when I was driving the RM from Winston-Salem NC,to Hilton Head, SC and the same loud noise happened. It was the same malfunction: a spark plug had loosened itself and blown out, Let me tell ya it's pretty darn loud.

Walking or using my iPhone to call for help were not options so what would couple of British V8er do?

We drove the car back to our home base at the host hotel, shutting off the engine for down hill sections of the twisty roads.

. We were successful and didn't even Get a ticket for disturbing the peace, You could hears us for miles.

I was just gonna post a photo then decided a story and a photo went together like an LBC and a V8

The cause? Wrong spark plugs had inadvertently been installed, subsequently loosened, and fell out. It's been diagnosed and permanently fixed. Always use the recommended plugs in specialty or aftermarket heads, they often are not the same as stock. Also, where cast iron heads often use a tapered seat, aluminum heads usually use a flat seat and sealing washer. The reach was short as well, requiring the threads to be chased.

Thanks to Steve DeGroat and Dan Blackwood for discovering the issue. A little research and the cause was clear.

There is a big car event scheduled for that Hotel (The Greenbrier) in a couple months, I'm sure Dan and the WVBCC have all the details.

Glad you guys enjoyed your ride ;) We also discovered right after that how restrictive the Star Wars air cleaner really is, and punched a bunch of big holes in the bottom of it (can't see 'em that way) to let more air in. Max was impressed by the test drive with the air cleaner off.

Jim

The West Virginia British Car Club has a block of rooms at the Quality Inn in Lewisburg, site of last summer's BV8 meet, at a rate of $85. Ask for the WVBCC rate when making a reservation.
