These four met 25 years ago at the Annapolis MG V8 Meet in 1998.

Planes, Train and Automobiles

British V8 2023 was held June 6th - 9th in Monticello, Illinois and hosted by Pete Mantell. This year’s theme was Planes, Trains and Automobiles. This year's event attracted 45 cars and 70 participants. Our Canadian friends were able to attend in full force and several participants made multi day long distance drives to the meet.

As always the event planning was perfect along with the weather. Monday was arrival day with time to catch up with old friends and meet new friends with a common interest in British cars. A pizza party and parking lot party capped off the day.

Tuesday - Planes and Automobiles
We drove over to the Frasca airport using scenic back
roads to tour the Frasca Air Museum. This is a private collection of beautifully restored warbirds, in flying condition, along with vintage general aviation aircraft and even a few British cars. Pete Mantall also arranged to have a picture next to a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk that was used in the movie 1941 starring John Belushi. Lunch was in Downtown St Joseph Illinois followed by a shop tour of Mantall Motorsport, McCowans Hotrods and tech sessions by Pete Mantell and Brishan McCowan. Dinner was BBQ at Winston’s Old Bank in Sidney Illinois Hosted by Pete and Sue Mantell.

Wednesday - Automobiles
Pete laid out a driving tour of the local parks. We broke up into 4 groups and paired up drivers and navigators. The area has a lot of scenic farms and great parks to tour. Lunch was in Clinton Illinois where there were several great places to eat. After Lunch we had our choice to visit Alto Vineyards, Chevy Museum or Allerton Park.

Thursday - Trains and Planes
We toured the Monticello Railroad museum where we were able to climb on and through the engines and rail cars they had on display and in restoration. The staff and volunteers were very helpful and had a lot of information about the history of each engine and rail car. Interesting to walk through the restored sleepers, business cars and engines and how travel was different in the rail era. We also took a hour-long train ride where several had the opportunity to ride in the locomotive cabin.

Thursday Afternoon several of us took the opportunity to Tour Model plane builder Peter Goldsmith’s basement where he designs and builds large scale model aircraft. Peter walked us through the power plants including jet turbine engines and the design assembly and finishing process. The detail and craftsmanship blew us away. Peter also provided a demo of his laser cutter that is used to produce the model airplane parts.

Friday - Planes, Automobiles, Boats and Trains
We attended the Horizon Hobbies RC Fest. If it was radio controlled, it was there. Our British cars were on display which drew a lot of interest and plenty of pictures from the others attending RC Fest. We watched an air show which included a variety of large scale RC model aircraft, helicopters and acrobatic airplanes. Peter Goldsmith was the pilot of several of the model aircraft we saw the day before.

Friday evening was the banquet where we reviewed the results of the exhaust note and loudness judging evaluated by Tim Duhmal & Max Fulton and popular vote. The quietest exhaust was measured by the best decibel meter the app store could provide. The quietest won some no doze pills and the loudest won a set of ear plugs. Sound tone results were also reviewed.

Overall it was another great event to attend. Everyone enjoyed the time together and learned a few things. A slide show is available on the BritishV8.org website under Web Forms, BritishV8 Pub section.

British V8 2024 will be held in Springdale Arkansas July 8th-12th. Registration details will be available in early 2024 on BritishV8.org and BritishV8meet.org websites.

Thank you for posting the photos, although I have never met any of you it is good to see faces as well as cars.
