Help me clean out my shop! Make me an offer. The 3.9 stays, though.

Actually Dave... could you please post the MGB GT V8 exhaust manifold photos here? Or e-mail them to me?

For the December issue of the Newsletter we're going to have a Special Editorial Section all about the factory MGB GT V8 program. I've got eight articles completed so far, and more coming!

The hardest part has been finding high quality photos to document Abingdon's design. If you would be so kind as to set up and take some pretty pictures and measurements, I'll bake that into one of the articles!

Hey, Curtis. I'll send you some photos and measurements.

BTW, I have a bunch of factory press releases with photos of various cars - original GT40, MGB's, Triumphs, etc. They were given to me by a neighbor who was in charge of training for BL/JRT in the seventies and also worked for Ford in the sixties. He also gave me the huge BL flag that flew in front of the headquarters here in Jax.

Included in my junk is a press release for a Rover concept car witha mid engine 3.5. I've never read anything about it anywhere. Do you want to use it? I could mail the packet to you. I might be able to get the engineers here at work to scan them.

Of course I do! Thanks for offering, Dave. At least in principle; we've got a ton of disc space and "bandwidth". Why not get all this interesting historical stuff online!?!

I'm up to my eyeballs at the moment (and it doesn't help that my computer has crashed six times already today.) It may be awhile before I can process everything. Let's get together off-line or by e-mail to figure out how to move forward.

Re: the Rover mid-engined concept car... just last night I was working with an article for the next newsletter issue that also mentions what I'd guess is the same car.

Quote:
There were any number of variations for the V8 in those early days. It was fitted to the revolutionary P6 BS mid-engined sports car prototype, designed by Spen King and Gordon Bashford, and killed off in the Leyland merger. This was a most interesting version of the engine. It ran facing the rear of the car with the final drive case into the sump, driven by a small prop shaft running from the gearbox at the front of the engine. Power was transmitted to the gearbox from the end of the crankshaft by Morse chain and a modified Rover 2000 gearbox was used lying on its side. Rover devised a new exhaust system for the car which gave equal pulses without the need for cross-over pipes. They also fitted 2" SU carburetors, with none of the usual complicated silencing air cleaner trunking. The result was a very quick car indeed, topping 140mph, accelerating from 0-60 mph in 7.0 seconds. The engine was mounted on one side, resulting in extra weight on the front and rear wheels on the right hand side. However, with left hand drive, and the driver only on board, the car would be perfectly balanced.

Did the press release include a photo? I really need a photo of that thing!

Curtis,

Here is a link of the Rover V8 P6BS Coupe killed off by internal politics at British Leyland.

Thanks Kevin - some very interesting photos there!

Most MG fans know that MG didn't get much respect from the Triumph-centric management of British Leyland...

Something that may be less well known is that Rover didn't get much respect either. One could argue that Rover doomed the prototype itself when they named it "B.S." (What on Earth were they thinking!) Still, to me it seems incredibly rude that the car was shown at the New York Motor Show as a "Leyland" prototype, not as a "Rover" prototype at all.

Thanks to David, here's the link to the original press release and press photos from that unveiling: [www.britishv8.org]

Notice how the press release completely blows off Spen King and Gordon Bashford and instead babbles about a dead guy who had absolutely nothing to do with the car, "the great Perry Thomas" (Leyland's chief engineer, decades before). Leyland management was so incredibly and pathetically disfunctional!

Maybe. I was thinking Nissan Pulsar NX (from the rear) or early Mercury Lynx (from the front.) I wrote a couplet about this car, but thought better of including it earlier: "It's so hideous, it ought to be amphibious."

Seriously though... doesn't it look like it ought to be amphibious?

Dave Gable,

Are the TR8 pistons cast or forged ? I really have never heard, other than "rumors" on good TR8 pistons.

I need a set of inexpensive forged 3.5 Rover pistons. I thought the SD1 engine was a 3.5, but I also thought the TR8 used a 3.9 Rover engine.

What do you think ?

Do you know anything more about the TR8 pistons & rods for $50.00 ?

The only factory engine for the TR8 was the 3.5L.

Thank you, Carl,

Have you ever heard the rumor that TR8 stock pistons are forged and not cast ?

What do you think ?
