FS: MGB V8 Project Parts
Posted by: declan
Date: May 16, 2017 02:19PM

My father-in-law recently passed, Dave Bash "crashbash" on the forums. We are selling his MGBV8 project to fund the restoration of his 69' B.

I will edit to include prices as soon as possible, but we will accept reasonable offers. I would be interested in trades for Moss supercharger, maybe paint/body work/interior from someone set-up and capable of doing quality work.

Parts are located in University City, MO. I can be contacted at 314-983-9155 (landline) or declangardner@sbcglobal.net
I am willing to place the motor and other parts on a pallet and ship-I have a commercial address with a dock available for pick-up, I have shipped vintage scooters in this manner and it is much cheaper business with a loading dock-business with a loading dock rather than residential-residential.

I will be adding pictures and post further details as I uncover paper work.

Dan Jones consulted him on some of the work, especially the heads and custom cam. Dave had estimated that the motor should produce 300-315 HP at RPM's reasonable for street use. I believe Dan will be able to chime in to help with some of the details.

I would sell either as a complete package or as listed below. 1. Complete engine, 2. Body/Shell 3. Suspension (I will separate the rear end from that package if someone wants it to go with the motor)

Engine:
-215 Olds block
-300 Buick heads (ported, polished, flow tested, stainless valves...) The exterior of the heads have also been polished.
-Custom cam made specifically for this motor and heads
-300 crank
-custom deep sump oil pan with scraper
-forged pistons
-aluminum flywheel
-custom tri-y headers
-demon carb, single plane intake
-Airfilter, alternator, distributor, water pump, belts, covers, timing chain, plugs, wires, coil...)
-5 speed T5 ("World Class" Camaro trans) and custom mount for MGB
-spare heads, block, powder coated factory valve covers and oil pan, various other parts

Body/Shell:
-Stripped down and primed, ready for prep and paint. Has rear-end and wheels, front of car sitting on a crate/dolly.(I was able to get it on to a trailer like this)
-Titled in my name as a 1970
-Have factory hardtop w/ glass (I will keep this unless it is sold as part of a complete package)
-Rubber Bumper car converted to chrome bumper and fender cut out/inserts completed by John Mangles of all British Car Repair in St. Louis

Front and rear suspension: (these were for the rubber bumper car, but may work on chrome bumper)
-Front coil over suspension with crossmember-powder coated silver w/ MGC 5 lug brakes (same pattern as GM 5 lug)
-Rear coil over kit
-narrowed Camaro rear end with MG mounts (limited slip differential and disk brakes) powder coated silver
-Panhard Rod Kit

The 1964 Buick 300 aluminum heads were ported by Jon Carls at JDC Engineering In Minonk, IL and flowed:

Lift Intake Exhaust
0.050 26.3 22.6
0.100 56.3 51.6
0.150 86.8 75.0
0.200 124.0 101.0
0.250 148.0 117.0
0.300 166.0 128.0
0.350 175.0 140.0
0.400 182.0 145.0
0.450 185.0 148.0
0.550 189.0 151.0

Flow numbers were taken on a Superflow bench at 28" H2O with a clayed intake radius but no exhaust pipe. Heads were ported by Jon Carls of JDC Engineering in Minonk, IL. 6000 Series Ferrea Buick V6 Stage 1 valves were used. Intake valves are part number F6238 (1.775" head diameter, 11/32" stem, 4.735" long with a 0.271" tip). Exhausts are part number F6237 (1.5" head diameter, 11/32" stem, 4.735" long with a 0.254" tip). Intake head shape is a 10 degree Super Flo. Exhaust is a 29 degree tulip. Ferrea 6000 Series valves are competition parts suitable for solid roller cams. The larger valves required larger seats, p/n 30903 for the intake and p/n 30647 for the exhaust.

Roller rockers are from Ted At TSI Imported Automotive and use stock rocker shafts fitted with end stands from D&D.

Intake manifold is a new Huffaker single plane reproduction from England and has Buick 300 sized ports.

Carb is a new-in-the-box 525 CFM Speed Demon.

Reciprocating assembly consists of a Buick 300 crankshaft with mains turned down to Olds/Buick 215 main diameters. Roads are narrowed Eagle 5.7" SBC H-beams and pistons are flat top Venolia forgings (no valve reliefs). Displacement is 266 cubic inches (3.53" bore by 3.4" stroke). The reciprocating assembly was initially designed for a turbocharged home-built aircraft (E-Racer retractable gear variant of a Rutan Long-EZ) so the compression is on the lower side with the larger chamber of the Buick 300 heads. Dave and I had discussed some ways of increasing the compression (milling heads and/or block, welding combustion chambers, etc.) but were waiting for assembly mock-up to figure out the actual compression ratio before proceeding. Compression ratio should work out well with the smaller chamber Rover or Buick/Olds 215 heads.

Camshaft is a hydraulic roller from Woody Cooper and uses the Erson shrouded hydraulic rollers.

Dave was planning on having the engine built by Dave McLain in Cuba, MO and had collected all the little parts that go along with a project engine like this. We went in on a custom torque plate which I think is at McLain's shop. Off the top of my head, some of the other parts include polished aluminum valve covers, timing cover, water pump and pulleys, various brackets, Ishihara-Johnson crank scraper and windage tray, higher capacity oil pan with oil control flaps, oil pump kit, TA Performance booster plate and externally adjustable pressure relief valve, electronic distributor, mini starter, ARP heads and mains stud kits, aluminum flywheel, stainless MGB tri-y headers (1.5" primary diameter), etc., etc.

Pictures of front and rear coil over kits, drop spindles, and panhard rod kit.
The front coil over kit is from Henk-Jan Vonk with gutted Armstrong lever shocks. Drop Spindles are from MG LTD./Killer Beez Racing. I am digging through papers to find info on the panhard rod kit.
The idea was to install this in the rubber bumper car and with the drop spindles it would be at chrome bumper MGB height. The 5 lug MGC hubs were included to match the 5 lug design of the narrowed 80's firebird rear end that I will post pictures of tomorrow.

Declan, I'm very sorry to hear about Dave. He will certainly be missed both here and on MGExperience.

Just as a hint, unless I'm mistaken one of the requirements for using these classifieds is that you have to include a price. Not to put pressure on you but you ought to at least try to let everyone know what you have in mind. Dave had some fairly serious coin tied up in some of that stuff, but what you can get out of it will depend on how much time you're willing to spend on it.

Jim

Thank you for the kind words.

Trying to come up with realistic prices based on what I see here in the classifieds, receipts, and my experience, but I may miss the mark. I will consider offers: Still trying to keep the engine together, but I am thinking it will be easier to sell the other items separately, willing negotiate package deals.

*Complete engine package w/ gearbox $5000 (also include extra heads and block)

*Body/Shell Rubber bumper car converted to chrome bumper, titled as a 1970 in my name. Hi-Tech Collision Repair of St. Louis performed the following work: cut & finished weld header wells, patched side marker lamp holes, patched front frame rails, chrome bumper conversion front and rear, straightened right frame rail, splice left and right fender fronts, re-prime body (etching primer). $1000

*MG LTD. 1” drop Spindles-$350

*"Bolt on 5 lug brake upgrade, uses all MG components. Rare front MGC 5 lug hubs, 5 x 4 3/4" bolt pattern (same as Chevy, Buick, Olds, Pontiac, Jag, etc). Factory MGB V8 calipers, rebuilt cross drilled MGC rotors (machined to factory MGB V8 diameter, .500" thick) Hub and rotor assemblies have been computer balanced MGB V8 pads (used have approx. 80-90% pad thickness) All wheel bearings, spacers, shims, caps, etc, (no seals) wheel bearings, shims and rotors marked per side, so that they can be reassembled to their original mating parts"-$800

*80’s Firebird rear end, 5 lug, disc brakes, limited slip, “3:3/1 I think”, and mounts to fit rubber bumper MGB (this may be the same as the chrome bumper?). The brakes will need a proportioning valve in line when you set up the new lines. $1200

*Front coil over kit from Henk-Jan Vonk with gutted Armstrong lever shocks, adjustable Gaz shocks, and cross member. $1100

*Panhard Rod Kit (I believe this is a Mantell Motorsports kit) $300

*Rear coil over kit (from Gary W/ Burner1-maybe just the brackets were from him and the shocks were sourced elsewhere?) $350

Just a suggestion: you might consider a special package price price for someone that would take everything.

Also, is appears that Dave did not go with the Tr-Y headers. The headers pictured are 4 into 1 headers.

Pictures of the body/shell, It was keep indoors until about three weeks ago, Dave was set on me getting it out of his garage-so it's been under a car cover at a friends shop. The car is solid except for the crazy job someone did adding holes for speakers.
