Sunbeam Tiger: Installing Turbo's
,Well after all these years of using NOS, I'm going to go with twin turbo's on my TIGER. I'm getting help from a company here in New Mexico called TURBO HORSEPOWER.
Got the idea after seeing turbo's mounted in back, and that's where mine are going. I've already got the turbo's mounted and the charge pipe's done. I'm putting a water to air in the trunk. Looking to get approx. 800hp to the rear wheels, the turbo's are 61mm. Should be up and running by June. The car has ran 9:77@144 on the NOS looking to go low 9's @150 something, on street tires. Sounds interesting. I have read about the rear turbos. It would really be good to actually see an installation and hear how it works. Should keep heat out of the engine bay too. Steve |

I will try and get some pics out, worked 10hrs on Sunday doing the exhaust. Who ever thought that you could put two turbo's, one 3'' charge pipe, two 2 1/2" pipes to the intercoler in the trunk and two 2 1/2" exhaust pipes over the rear end and still have enough room for the 8 3/4 rear end. Its tight but none of the pipes hit and the only thing I have to do is make the bracket for the panard rod a little longer to clear the exhaust pipe.
Like you said Steve it will keep the heat out of the engine bay, plus it will make the engine compartment real simple. Jerry |

Sorry Steve that's a little to far to travel, maybe someday after I retire my wife and I going to travel some and hoping the Tiger will be dependable enough to drive with this new set up.

Got the car fired up Sat. and drove it around, having problems on the low end tune sounds like a vacume leak but can't seem to located it.

Got the car dynoed and made 5 pulls and ended up with 382rwhp and 393 torque.
This was done on a stock motor with 200k miles and thru a PG trans Car drives great with the fuel injection and the turbo's come on at about 3200 rpm's and pulls hard to 5800. Can't wait to build the other motor but will have to wait, low on funds.. |

Went to the drag strip Sat. Car ran 11;98@116 on 5lbs of boost and motor starts to lay over before we get to the end.
Needs less gear or bigger motor |

Silver State Challenge? Grrrr, steve the car is really being set up up for 1/8 and 1/4 racing and of coarse for street use. I don't know about those prolonged high speeds. But one never knows, I can tell you one thing the turbo's don't stop pulling. On paper with 2:88's in the rear and the big motor in the car looking at 175-180 @ 8000rpms and 12 lbs of boost i think and i don't know if I could trust the 42 year old parts on the car or have the balls to run that fast.(it's a age thing)

Remote turbo is something I had considered for my 3.4L. Small turbo that wouldn't give too much lag- about 3-4 psi boost and all with an attempt to keep the engine mostly pure stock. I have seen that setup on 3.4L V6 Camaros as well as others.
I really like the setup! I like SC more but the remote turbo just seems neat as long as its something else to hide because my car is supposed to look like a pup, not a monster. -BMC. |

So far with this stock motor setup it works ok, I don't think I have any more turbo lag then the guys with front mounted turbos.
I do like not having all the heat under the hood and also it is so much cleaner looking and nobody knows. When we put the other motor combo in it will be setup for the turbo's that's when i'll be able to tell about turbo lag. Turbohorsepower says he can redo the turbo's to get them spool alot faster but to wait till we put the real motor in the car. Jerry |
