To pull or not to pull?
My clutch is slipping and I need to have it replaced.
I've been told I need to pull the engine to reach the transmission, but am not certain that is true. Do I really have to pull the engine, or can I put the car on a lift and get to it that way? Also, when they say pull --- does that mean move the engine block two or three inches, or are they actually pulling the entire thing out? Mark |

Re: To pull or not to pull?
Mark, if your talking the stock MGB 1..8L, then you have to pull the motor. Thats it.

Re: To pull or not to pull?
So completely out of the engine compartment, or just enough to get to the transmission?

Re: To pull or not to pull?
Curtis and I were talking. He mentioned that there's a difference.
Do they need to remove the entire engine from the compartment or unbolt it and slide it forward in the engine compartment. |

Re: To pull or not to pull?
I always felt that by the time you did that it was easier to just pull it the rest of the way out and have everything in the open where it's easy to work on, rather than wrassle with it under the car.

Re: To pull or not to pull?
Echoing Jim's advice, besides it is a PITA to get the tranny aligned back with the motor unless right out where you can get at everything.
BTW, you mentioned before that it slipped in 4th gear only. Is that really true? |

Re: To pull or not to pull?
1-3 gears drive fine, it's 4th that slips then it starts making 3rd slip --- like if I downshift around a corner.
Why, is that strange? |

Re: To pull or not to pull?
Not at all. Top gear has the most resistance so it's really the most likely gear to slip under full power, and the most likely to be noticed as well.
