is swaping out the Mg b gt original engine and putting in a SR20det a good move?
i have 1970 mg b gt and the original engine is not good and since im in Jamaica the parts are hard to source so im wondering if putting in and Sr20 red top (det) is a good move or is there a better engine that can be installed in it

Daryl
Not many people are into 4 pot motors but a few have been done and heres a couple of links below. Nice smooth powerful turbo engine 200 BHP and more available with a few mods. [www.britishv8.org] [www.britishv8.org] Kevin. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/28/2009 04:36PM by castlesid. |

Re: is swaping out the Mg b gt original engine and putting in a SR20det a good move?
i was thinking of installing a ka24 out out a nissan 180 sx into my 66mgb. the platform is the same you're going to face the same holdup as myself you're going to have to find a way to make the front sump oil pan into a rear one i cant find any info how to do it but its been done on others. otherwise its chopping the support frame in the engine bay and i dont think thats a good idea as it may compromise the structural integrity of the car. some people kept it as a front sump and notched the support frame a bit, gave just enough room to fit the motor but the engine stuck out a bit so they threw on the mgc hood on just so it would fit. otherwise it would be a relatively basic engine swap if you're not afraid of some welding and electrical :D
i believe the ka24 and sr20 have close to the same hp from a atmospheric standpoint roughly 150 hp. if you want the turbo the sr20 is the best deal. i wanted the twin cam KA just because the parts for it are readily available where i live. well what i am getting at if you're looking for a reliable 4cylinder drive train that you won't have to worry about once its in there the nissan drive train is the best bet. P.S if anyone knows how to convert the oilpan to rear sump please send me a line thanks! |

Re: is swaping out the Mg b gt original engine and putting in a SR20det a good move?
Joel, if you look around at the different JDM parts websites, you will eventually run into a pan that will work. The KA and the SR share some parts to include the oil pan. I dont remember which one it was off the top of my head, but a JDM specific car had a rear sump pan. I want to say a Nissan Bluebird or a JDM Sentra SE-R with the SR20DET. A look through some of the import tuner magazines will help too, for example, "Import Tuner" just wrapped up a build on a turboed KA24DE in the January 2010 issue that ended up making 802 hp and also look up a back issue of the same mag to Jan 09 for thier breakdown of their Top Shop Challange SR20DET that made 827 hp. Hope this helps :-)
