A nice milestone for Brenda's GT build
Our GT is on all 4 wheels as of today! I just got done yesterday welding and fabricating the rear suspension attachment points. This suspension setup front and back is from Ted Lathrop at Fast Cars. Very pleased, and nice products Ted!
Here is some photo's of the GT on the ground. I will need to relieve some turning area just behind the front tires at full lock. The rear tires don't look like much flare is needed, but yes it is needed for suspension travel. Looks like I will have 1 3/8" from the flattened bump stop to the tire in the rear. That should be enough room for suspension to move. These tires and wheels are the same size as on our TR6. The MG wheels are 1/2" wider is the only difference, and same size tires. The tires are 245/45/17 Yokahama S drives. Trying to keep this project moving along at a good pace. This project started just after we go home from the Omaha meet. |

Re: A nice milestone for Brenda's GT build
More photos!
Attachment points for the Panhard Bar. Extended the cargo area where the back seat was. You can also see where a square hole is cut for the top of the Panhard bar bracket, to be welded to the frame rail. The triangular bars are so that the frame rail won't bend under hard cornering. Center link attachment point and driveshaft hoop. Panhard bar attachment at a different angle. Lower link attachment point. The new frame rail bracket link attachment point has been dropped down some for better tire bit. So far everything is looking good. Next will be to fabricate a bracket on top of the driveshaft tunnel to strengthen the top link attachment point. I will be moving the e-brake from the side to this bracket on top. It's fun to move this project at a good pace! |

Re: A nice milestone for Brenda's GT build
Yes Rick, Carl is right, and you knew also it is an 8" differential.
Have come to a close of the work day on the GT. Finished fabricating the strengthening bracket for the top link area. Figured a way to install the e-brake while the bracket is welded to the tunnel, just incase for maintenance. Welded four taps with the nut welded to the back tap in two places. The e-brake will slide in from the top, the lower hole that is drilled, is for installing the pin, to hold the cables going through the body tub. Using a Lokar e-brake handle, almost looks like a TR6 e-brake handle. You also can see some previous owner cut part of the inner body for a make shift speaker hole. I will install a speaker there, but will need to brace the area to keep the structure integrity(between the back door jam and inner wheel well). |

Re: A nice milestone for Brenda's GT build
Thanks Rob & Dave,
Dave you are right. The blasting company sprayed high build black epoxy base coat primer. They gave me the option between black or gray. I picked black because I have gray. I figured it would be easier to find the high spots when doing the body work. |

Re: A nice milestone for Brenda's GT build
Calvin,
The car's looking great! We need more photos of Brenda getting her hands dirty. Question. Do you find it an issue at all of having to clean a weld area of epoxy primer, before you can actually weld. In other words, do you think it might have been better to leave it in bare metal? Ken |

Re: A nice milestone for Brenda's GT build
Thanks for the comments Jim N,
Hi Ken, I would be better to have bare metal, but for as long as this project will take, I was having some surface rust showing up. So it good that is there but it is a pain to clean the area before welding. So to answer the question, If you do all welding in a short period of time, it would be better to not have the primer. I did think of this before they sprayed the car! Went with the primer route. |

Re: A nice milestone for Brenda's GT build
Have you ever used "weld through" primer? I saw it on one of those tv shows.

Re: A nice milestone for Brenda's GT build
Hi Dan,
That is the question I had for the blasting shop. They said No, we don't have that primer here. So that did cross my mind at the time too. |

Re: A nice milestone for Brenda's GT build
I heard that "weld-through" primer was a compromise. Not very good to weld through and maybe not a very good primer either. But then maybe that was just a rumor...

Re: A nice milestone for Brenda's GT build
PJ, It is always nice to say one year, but we all know it does take longer than that. The good part about this build is that we have probably 85% of the parts already.
Scott, Is our engine in the same place as yours?? So today we thought of test fitting the ls1/T56 in the engine bay. It went right in, with grinding the front lip off the middle cross member. The engine is sitting on the rectangular bosses on sides of the block, right on the frame rail, and just in front of the front bolt holding the suspension. Of course with Teds front suspension the Camaro pan just slid passed his cross member. Here are some photos: Okay, This photo was some of Brenda's humor, figuring it would help to get it in there! The modifications that were already done before attempting test fit, frame rail mod on both sides, and firewall cuts. The water pump fittings will be taken out, and tapped for 90 degree fittings like we did on our TR6. There is 1 1/2" between the stock firewall and the passenger head which sets back farther than the driver side. Some more photo's to follow showing fitment! |
