A question for those who have done a V6 swap on a 74 Mgb convertible

Hi, i have a 74 mgb convertible and am attempting to swap in a 3400sfi out of a impalla. With a nv1500 transmission from a s10.. I noticed things come up a bit short.. Is this swap possible without the T-5 Transmission from a camero or a firebird? There getting hard to find is why i ask.. And id prefer not to cut holes in my floor for the shifter. Any help at all would be appreciated... Thanks

I put a 3400 from an Alero in my TR6.
I went the route of going with the following:
S10 bellhousing from a 92-93 4 cylinder s10
The same year and make s10 clutch diaphragm and clutch fork
A flywheel from a 98 Chev Cavalier.
A clutch plate and throwout bearing from a mid 90's 4 cylinder SVO mustang.
A modified Pontiac Fiero clutch slave
A Ford T5 transmission from an early 90's v8 Mustang (note the hole in the bellhousing has to be machined out so the T5 will slip in.
Going this route gives you a shifter location that is further back than the s10 transmission and the shifter is not tilted to the side.
I hope this helps you with giving you ideas of other options.

Cheers
Byron

Colin,

I suspect that the NV1500 has the shifter in the same location as the T5 for all the S10 pickups which is 9" further Forward than the Camaro/Firebird.

If you were to make some sort of outside linkage, maybe it would be possible but the tunnel room above the gearbox is so tight, it's not going to be for the faint of heart.

What computer and wiring loom are you planning run?

Also, every inch you lengthen the shifter is going to increase the throw so adding 9" will make a big difference even if it is a rearward extension. Most want to shorten the shifter.

One option that may help those looking for a NEW 5 speed - McLeod ( the folks who make clutches & hydraulic throwout bearings ) now have a 5 speed, available through Summit Racing, that is close in size to the old Muncie 4 speed....!st gear 2.95 :1. 5th gear 0.63:1. Cost about $3000, including shifter.
