Can the SMITH OEM be converted to Digital?
Hi Y'll,
I thought I read somewhere that the Smith Speedo can be converted to Digital - does anyone know who might do that? Is there a conversion kit manufacturer anywhere? |

Explain a little more. Are you trying to drive your stock speedo with an electronic sender?

No not sure - from what I understand there ( I think its SpeedHut the guts) of their meter which can be used to install into the
Original Smith Speedo. I am restoring a '73 MGB using a GM V6 engine with EFI and 7730 EMC. |

This unit hooks to your factory cable but uses gps to control the speedo so the cable doesn't connect to the transmission Google GPS speedometer drive |

Re: Can the SMITH OEM be converted to Digital?
I used a Jaguar speedo (1985 XJ6, 4", 140mph, pushbutton odometer reset, white on black) and fitted the MG bezel. It uses a generator that attaches to the transmission's speedo cable drive and runs a motor on the back of the speedo. 3 wires connect the two, plus power and ground at the speedo. 3 phase. Don't think there were any electronics involved.

Re: Can the SMITH OEM be converted to Digital?
Maybe I check out the Jag speedo route - I have a BorgWarner 5 speed with a pulse generator

Re: Can the SMITH OEM be converted to Digital?
Smiths supply a digital speedo that can be driven by a pulse sensor or a GPS module that they supply. Robert Milks has one in his B. The output from the GPS sender is digital (8000 pulses per mile) and can drive the speedo, along with a cruise control and also supply a signal for an EPS. The speed signal is digital only. I garnered this information directly from Smiths in England as Robert recommended to me during a discussion at the 2018 V8 meet. This proves you can learn a lot from those at the meets.
