Reduce the diameter of MGB Mk1 steering wheel
Can anyone recommend a shop to reduce the diameter and leather wrap a Mk1 banjo steering wheel?

Simpler to use an early MG Midget wheel. It is 1" smaller, almost the same design but the spokes are 2 wire in stead of 3 wire. This is what I used on my 1966 MGBV8.

Re: Reduce the diameter of MGB Mk1 steering wheel
Jeff, I doubt if you'll be able to find a shop that will reduce the diameter. Too much liability on that type of modification to the steering I'd think. I am using a reduced diameter wheel on my MGA project using an early MGB wheel with a rim from an old Superior or Grant wheel I picked up at a swap meet. I just cut the original plastic covering off the rim and cut out the center spokes, ground down the rough edges and then shorted and welded the MGB spokes to the rim. Used some body filler to smooth out the area around the spokes and have a leather cover cut and ready to lace on when the car is closer to finished, don't want to damage it during construction.

Jim,
I didn't think of looking at the Midget wheel. That's a great solution. Bill, Your solution is perhaps the road I'd go down. It was looking at your MGA pic that got me thinking about this. Thank you both. |
