2.8-3.4 Headers from Scratch
Posted by: burner1

First I would say the easiest thing to do is get headers from Bill Guzeman. Having said that some times you just want to do things on your own. Here is a pictorial of making mine. I will say that I scrapped the first set because they would not fit. This set came out better.

Nice work Gary, I built a set for a friend here in KC but didn't do nearly as nice a job as you did. I did leave enough clearance at the head flange to allow him to remove the allen head bolts with a special short allen wrench. It was fun to make them and I enjoyed the practice TIG welding as well.

Awesome work Gary!! One dumb question,8i what are those two triangle shaped tongues that sit beside the center tube for? I have to modify the headers ( from British Car Conversions) for my Gm 3400 that I am putting in my TR6. Being that I am not a tig welder I will be getting my buddy to do it. If I ever do another project i will be looking at buying a tig welder!!

Cheers
Byron

I just did that to smooth the transition as each tube mixes. It's common in collectors. I really have no way of knowing if it will help anything but it seemed a reasonable thing to do.

They look great & like they'll flow well too. I envy folks with or with access to a water jet. So many things would be easier to make! Too bad there's not a way to co-op one.

It's a laser. GMC V12 702 CU header flanges on top, 2.8-3.4 flanges on bottom here:

Just remember laser payments are a lot like house payments!

I am a little slow with everything else going on but I am making some progress. I coated the headers with ceramic Chromex in the kiln. They could look a little better but they will work. Pay not too much attention to wiring mess. I am working on it trying to clean it all up:

Gary, as if anything in that engine compartment could be considered a mess. I know it's not done, but it already looks much better than a lot ours. It's going to be beautiful when you're done.

Thanks Bill, I don't think I would Chromex again unless I set up a down draft booth. I breathed a little and you can tell you not suppose to be breathing that stuff.

Great job Gary, it look awesome. Really looks great.

Gary,

When I built the headers that we used now, the collector was a big thing while flow testing the headers.

The ribs between the three tubes are there to help on the flow. It really makes a difference.

The biggest difference that I did not incorporate into the headers was a divider at the exit of the collector.
The divider when up from the exit flange 4" up into the collector. This really increase the the velocity which in turns help to scavenge the gasses at above 4500 rpm Also found that the size of the header pipe from the collector to the muffler the 1.75" had much better numbers on the flow bench than the 2"

Some some data that may help you. I spend lots of hours on the flow bench with the help of my friend who does racing heads only.

The length had very little effect on the flow bench.

That's very cool Bill, you should have 2 sets made so you can dyno them on the same engine. That would be pretty cool comparison.

I think, in all honesty, my biggest goal was actually to make them myself what ever they may be. I can't really brag about any measurable performance gain I did with it. I just hope they don't leak!

Thank You Bill, Merry Christmas to you as well. I saw it has been cold for you guys out that way.

I do wish we lived closer. It would be great to teem up on projects.
