Just another nubie
Hello MG lovers names Rich, I'm finally getting around to doing a V-8 conversion I've had the car since 78' its been off the road for the last ten years. I've rebuilt the 4 banger intending to rebuild it to stock, but after seeing all the great conversions out there(most on this site) gave me the want, need, desire, ect. to do it.Just read the replies to Tom Lay's posting and it answered most of my questions. I'm putting in a 302 with a t5 and hopeing to put a posi rear out of a Ford, somthing with disc brakes, would anyone have any suggestions on donor parts, I wish I could put everything in new but I'm doing this project on a bugget and will be getting everthing used and upgradeing or rebuilding it myself.I would like to be at the meet in Wis. but can't make it this year, will look at all info given to Tom.Sounds like a great bunch of MG people, will look forward to seeing and hearing from as many as possible Thanks

Re: Just another nubie
Richard,
The meet is 454 miles away from you, about 7 hours according to mapquest. [www.britishv8.org] If you want information and great ideas, this is it. I am "only" about 5 or 6 hours away from this and thats VERY close for a conversion meet. Normally, they are southeast or straight west and over the mountains. This is the closest we may ever get to an event and CHEAP when you consider the people that will be there either showing off their work or there wares. This is cheap for your time and will answer so many questions that you never knew you had, similar to this forum, only in real life. I highly recommend seeing if you can break away for a day or two. We are puttiing all our time into a few cars in the shop to get there. Its a big push but its well worth going to. BTW: There are already registered SEVEN Ford V8 302 conversions, where else are you going to be able to pick out the detail this well??? What about those items that no one but you could think of that you may have trouble converting later? The time and costs now will save you months of headaches later. -BMC. |
Re: Just another nubie
Welcome!
In just a post or two I've gained piles of info that's set my conversion in motion. Not to mention the incredible source of info in the gallery and how I did it articles. So far I'm shooting for a "rough" version of my conversion on the road by October (I'm on the fence whether I can make it to the Grassroots Motorsports $2008 challenge). Either way, building in a couple of phases. Phase I is bodywork/mods, drivetrain and getting it functional and pretty on the outside. Phase II is cleaning up the budget shortcuts (like adding an interior, better rear end (I expect to kill the salisbury unit if I make it to the challenge). Glad to share anything I learn on the way. |

Richard
First welcome to the forum, you are in the rite place. You are in luck as at least 3 of the 302/5.0 conversions are here in Michigan. You are only a couple hours from me and probally closer to Marc who is in the process of building a 5.0 as we speak. I would be happy to set up a time to show you my car and answer any questions you may have, or chat on the phone most any time. That all been said the best bang for the buck for your project would to be buy a late 80s early 90s Mustang 5.0 5 speed as a donor car. The Roller cam EFI 5.0 is a great motor very healthy at 100 thousand miles. As to the rear-end there are several that can be modified and are ideal for the b I shortened a 10 bolt from a later Camaro with disc breaks. I don't think you have to buy everything new, I look at this way I drive My B about 5 thousand miles per year, only on nice days and for the most part within 50 miles of my home, my truck that I have to be ready to leave at a moments notice to anywhere in this part of the country in any weather non stop has over 350 thousand on it, what one of these two vehicles should have the brand new parts? Just a thought. Joe Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/23/2008 10:43PM by MGB SS. |

Re: Just another nubie
Richard,
It appears that the earliest date to kick tires would be after I return from the British V8 meet in Wisconsin. Send me a PM after July 17 and we'll set up a visit. |
