Manifold

hi,as usual looking for some help,i have a bonnet(sorry hood) clearance problem,i have used the following components,

super victor 8.2 fuel injection manifold(yes it is a bit high)
edelbrock 4 barrel throttle body
edelbrock pro flo 14" dia air cleaner,i have lowered this as far as possible and have substituted a 2" filter for the 3" one.
I am using an RV8 bonnet(hood) steel one not fibreglass

four questions
1/ anybody know of a lower air cleaner
2/will a 14" x 2" filter flow enough air (302 edelbrock 367hp engine)
3/can i shave a few millimetres off the intake manifold and what effect will this have
4/ how do i post photos

many thanks
Nigel

I asked similar questions a couple of months ago and was told that a 2" filter would be more than adequate for a 3947cc engine and would fit under a normal MGB hood.

So, I have the standard low rider edelbrock filter base and will fit a 2" by 14" K&N E3710 air filter with the K&N Xtreme top.

However, this is about 1/8" too high and I have sliced a 3" filter in half and will use this untill the engine mountings settle down a little.

Regards Ian

Thanks Ian,however i have a 5litre engine.
With regards to the Xtreme top the reviews i have read all say they lose you horsepower,if you look on summit racings site you will see they sell filter bases that feature drops up to 1.75",however you would have to see if they cleared your carb choke if your car is carbed,My real as yet unanswered question is what effect does machining 5mm off of top of manifold have, thanks for trying to help

Nigel

Low dual plane manifolds work great on the street since most of the rpm range is mid range. Tall open plenum are for top rpm and loose power in the mid range.
Low dual plane make more hp in the mid range and drive ability is much better with the low dual plane manifold.

Why dont you look at this for a different perspective Nigel?

You say you have a 4 barrel throttle body. So I assume you are using injection?

What is the bore size of the throttle body?

Calculate the total free area of your 4 bores. This will equate to X square inches.

Then measure the clearance between the top of your throttle body and the underside of the air filter cover.

This will give you a dimension that is X circumference by Y clearance height. Now calculate the free area of this gap. If its equal to, or bigger than the sum of your throttle body bores then its ok for air flow isnt it. I would guess that the area of the gap between filter cover and carb top is less than the free area of the air filter.

How high is your manifold?
Shaving a few mm off the carb mount wont make much difference unless you are looking for peak output for racing. Can you put some pictures of your setup on here?

What do you intend to use the car for. Racing or road use?

I havent seen reviews on the extreme top filter. Why do folk think that this filter will lose you horse power?

Can you show us these reviews please.

If you are on EFI then this should not be an issue eh?

Best way to post pictures would be to add them to photobucket or a similar picture hosting site and then put them on here. Or email your pics to me at perrystephenson7@hotmail.com and I'll get the up for you.

I can see that you are really close to getting it to fit !!

If you can shave 10-15mm off the manifold the RV8 bonnet will shut eh?

I Hello the best air cleaner that I found to my project. Is the Ford racing with 13 inch low-profile carburetor center to the top is only two and 3/8 inches my 347 runs over 500 horse it runs just slightly better with no air cleaner inside cleaner ring that touches the carb I cut at an angle to give the cleaner more clearance in the front the element that I running is 2 3/4 tall here are some photos my intake manifold is a professional products hurricane it's 8 inches tall + nitrous plate I looked at a lot of air cleaners including a Holly low-profile with the filters down on the size I don't think that thing flowed more than 250 hp, over 4000 RPMs it would blow black smoke like you had to choke on this little ford racing is cleaner runs just fine my carburetor flowers at 810 CFM and I run it over 7000 RPMs if I was not spraying nitrous I would have decked the intake manifold and tilted the carburetor 1/4 inch forward

Thanks for the replies,Perry very kindly posted the pic's,i have ordered a AC cobra hood scoop which should arrive friday, perry has explained to me how to post pic's,so will give it a go and you can tell me what you think.
The other option is to get a mould taken off my RV8 hood,i have a friend who owns a grp shop who says he can make the bulge a bit bigger while retaining the shape,ho hum
Her is another view with RV8 hood on and front spoiler from frontline
