MGB GT Cargo Area
Hi,
Could I call upon your wealth of information again. In several of the 'How it was Done' articles there are photographs of the area below the cargo deck which have been carpeted (a good example being that of Dan Masters). Have these guys used ready made carpets or have they been custom made ? (the photos of Dan's car almost look as if the 'carpet' has been sprayed on. Many thanks John |

Dan's GT:
The trick is to use the right carpet for the job. The carpet you want is commonly called "ozite" and what's special about it is that it doesn't have any backing. It will mold and stretch into place over a tacky spray-on adhesive. Here's one source: [www.yourautotrim.com] Another trick material you'll want to know about is "mead board". That's the very dense cardboard which ozite is often applied to whenever a flat, removable panel is desired. It comes in various thicknesses. Once mead board is covered with ozite, automotive suppliers commonly stamp it to shape with something called a "steel rule die". That's production tooling... not really applicable to trimming a hot rod, but you can learn a few tricks from how the big boys do things. For example: to get really neat straight folds, the steel rule die is set up to cut dashed lines right through the mead board and ozite assembly. (You won't see the cuts from the ozite side!) |
