PJ, if you're not interested in rebuilding it yourself, why not get the one you have rebuilt locally? There are bound to be places around you that rebuild T5's and then you'd have a warranty and a local relationship in case of future problems.

Re: I need a new 5 spd tranny for my 3.4 V6
I am looking into an exchange/ rebuild option locally, my tranny has case damage and some wear internally. I have found used " as is" for $350 and rebuilts from close to $2000.00
The tranny that was in the car was making a whining sound that had become progressively worse as the miles piled up. It was leaking ATF from a crack. Ken Nicks said I was living a charmed life having avoided a catastrophic failure somewhere in the boondocks. I hope to take two road trips this summer: V8 meet in Omaha and MG 2013 in OR. As a fixed income retiree I'm hoping to find a good deal, hey who doesn't want to find a bargain? |

Isn't it amazing that considering how many v8 t5 camaros there were/are, that the chevy t5 is kind of hard to find at a reasonable price?

PJ,
Not sure what it would take to use the Ford Motorsport version of the T5. It does however give you the V8 gear set, 330 lb ft torque rating for $1600 brand new. You may also find a dealer willing to cut you a deal through say jobber pricing. Back when they were $1200 from summit I got one from a ford dealer for $1100 delivered. The latter Camero's used the Ford bell pattern I think, maybe the S10 bellhousing can be drilled for the Ford. [www.fordracingpartsdirect.com] |

PJ:
My local "big American" guy gave the following info which is only slightly more optimistic than what You found: --<A freshly re-built WC (world class) T5 would go for real big money, like $1200-1500. The one Bernie loaned Simon I think he wanted $250 or 300 for. What is the diameter and spline count you need for the input/output shafts? This one Simon currently has strikes me as "big spline/big spline", but I'd need something to compare it to. :-/ I think I'd scrounge a used one and have it rebuilt by a tranny shop. But the World Class unit would be faster, natch. M Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/02/2013 08:00AM by madmax. |

Max,
Thank you for the suggestions. The tranny and I are not in the same town, but I will get the measurements next time I am at Ken Nick's shop in Jonesville. I May get a used V8 unit then rebuild it. The case of my old one is no good as well as some of the moving parts. |

Re: I need a new 5 spd tranny for my 3.4 V6
I looking forward to driving my BGT V6 again in a week or two. Should be a different car: quieter, less smelly with the new "O" ring stopping the oil leak at the distributor that leaked on the exhaust pipe. A more useful gear ratio, and no more tranny whine that sounded like a jet engine. new clutch, new engine and tranny mounts, additional heat reflective material, etc. Earlier this winter this BGT got new shocks, springs all brake components new, changed out the pedal box and more.
This car is driven a lot, it's sorta a beater in the looks department but I like driving it and am happy to get these problems corrected in prep fro many more long distance drives. The following is a quote from Ken about my old vs new transmission. "1. The transmission that was in the car was an '84/'85 S-10 transmission with the following ratio's. 1st-4.03 2nd-2.37 3rd-1.49 4th-1.00 5th-.76 with a 3.90 rear ratio. I don't see how you can get much more "unfavorable" than that. He had a "go 100 feet & change 1st gear. He was using 2nd gear as first except on a big hill. 2. The transmission going in is a '87 V8 Camaro with 1st-2.95 2nd-1.94 3rd-1.34 4th-1.00 5th-.63 That happen's to be the exact ratio in my car and I am quite happy with it personally. It's also a fact that the Tremec T-5 is one of the most popular transmissions on the market for many applications and that's the same ratio we have." |
