Max tire width with rear Bump stop
I have recently purchased my 1st MGB and plan on doing a 302 V8 swap. Is a nice driver car so the idea is to upgrade while I drive, on a budget and collect the V8 parts.
I ran across a smoking deal on a set of Mustang pony wheels with 225X50X16 tires. I am planning on modifying the rear bumpstop to remove where it sticks out in the wheelwell. It looks like 225s might just fit with some wheelwell lip rolling. Is it possible or am i just dreaming? Also will they work on the front? |

Re: Max tire width with rear Bump stop
Quite a few of us run 225/50 rubber with some rear fender lip messaging, but axle width and wheel offset will play a big part in determining whether yours will work or not.
If wheel offset and axle width are close to optimum, you can get that size tire to work on the rear. The fronts (again depending on wheel offset and ride height) can work, with due regard to possible interference from sway bar linkage and header collectors. |
Re: Max tire width with rear Bump stop
Yes, it looks real close but doable. I am trying to confirm backspacing but based on info I can find it's 4-7/8 which should put offset very near 22MM.

Re: Max tire width with rear Bump stop
22mm is close to the original MG wheel spacing - and it's the offset of my 15 x 7 Panaports. ...if your axle is original or same width as original, you should be in the ballpark.

Re: Max tire width with rear Bump stop
All depends on what size wheel, offset by itself is meaningless unless you know the width as well.
Case in point 205/55/16 on a 16X7" with ET 38 will not fit without spacers or removal of the inner bump stop. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/07/2014 05:46PM by mstemp. |

Re: Max tire width with rear Bump stop
Quote:Keith has measured backspace at 4-7/8" and offset at 22mm - that indicates that the overall rim width is 8" or an actual bead to bead width of 7". So, Keith has a 16 x 7 Pony wheel with 22mm (+) offset and should fit his application based on my comments above. |

Re: Max tire width with rear Bump stop
Graham,
Sorry missed part of Keith's comments. 225/50/16 is still going to be tight and require fender lip mods. Even my setup rubs the outside occasionally but I have not rolled the fender lip. My offset is 31 mm when you factor in the spacers. |

Does that bolt pattern bolt up, I always thought that pattern didn't

Re: Max tire width with rear Bump stop
The Mustang bolt pattern is 4 x 4.25" or 4 x 108 mm for the Fox bodies. The MGB is 4 x 4.5" is I remember correctly. Anyway, I had an 89 Mustang with the chrome Pony R wheels and they wouldn't fit. Looked really nice on the Mustang. My wife wanted me to keep the wheels when I sold the car. lol.

Graham, True, but he's looking for flares now. Bruce's car is using 2" 2 piece 4 lug to 5 lug adapters and Omni flares for his R type wheels.
