Cruise Control

My wife and I just completed a week long route 66 tour from Chicago to LA and back (4510 miles great trip) in my 1966/1980 MGB roadster (215 Buick,T5 trans). All went well EXCEPT that my wife can not drive a manual transmission, so I was the only one driving. I am not as young as I used to be and after 10/12 hours a day behind the wheel, My right leg sure did miss not having a cruise control.
Has anyone found a Great cruise control unit that will work in my MGB?

I adapted the Ford all electric cruise control to mine but haven't spent enough time on it to get it working yet. It's a pretty compact unit but the controls are all voltage based on a single input line so that part is a little tricky, and you have to have the right transducer for the speedometer cable. There's probably a simpler unit out there but I do like the way Ford's cruise works.

Thanks Jim. This is the kind of information that I was hoping for.
I was hoping to learn from other's errors and save myself from having to reinvent the wheel.
Thanks again. I'm sure that my right leg will thank you on our next trip.

Merv,
The Audiovox Universal Cruise Control kit (typical ebay link below) has been very popular for the MGB. I bought one years ago but haven't installed it yet, primarily due to the fact that my leg never tires on a long run.
[cgi.ebay.com]
Usually obtainable for less than $100 and has numerous hardware adaptation pieces to adapt to your specific throttle configuration.

This sure would be a good topic for an article, wouldn't it?

I don't know much about aftermarket cruise controls, but I do know that if you look hard enough (and I suppose if you knew what you were looking for), you'd probably find Audiovox cruise control on a bunch of cars in the Photo Gallery.

Some of the mechanical parts can be seen in this photo of David Hawkins' installation:

Or on Paul Schils' GT:

The controller can be seen in this photo of Evan Amaya's installation:

And on Paul's center console (left and down from the shift lever)

I think Tony Andrews mentioned he was planning to install the Audiovox unit soon...

There's one hiding in here, as well. When the washerbottle is installed, it hides the actuator even more.

Jim, after my wife and I completed our 4500 mile Route 66 trip, I was feeling rather cocky but after reading about your year long loop with your MG, I kind of feel like a WIMP.
After reading your description of your travels and your modifications, I have a couple of choices, as to be terribly impressed or to request a sanity check.(Not sure yet)
Seeing that your Lincoln got just a bit too close to beating my best Autocross time (Although Blazers are obviously FASTER) this year perhaps, I will delay making a decision on my two choices.

Thanks for everyone’s advice.
Merv

Merv, you crack me up! Your (sanity) check is in the mail (wink, wink). It's good to be among friends.

Jim
