Re: For a 302 conversion - pro/con of headers out the wheel well?
Oh well.
If the only reason you put headers on an engine is because they look better than iron manifolds, or because that's all there is available, then sure. Your point makes perfect sense. Usually though there is a goal like improved mileage, broader torque range, and a noticeable power increase that applies pretty much across the board. If that is the case it usually helps to know what you are buying, though in our case not so much. Honestly, I am sorry that short headers like we are almost universally forced to use in these cars have these shortcomings. And it's nice that we can at least mostly overcome the power issue by adding displacement. I'd love to be able to say that it just doesn't matter. But really, it does. BTW, we're really enjoying the latest arctic clipper y'all sent down our way. I get to take the snow blower on its maiden run soon as the battery is charged enough to start. Hoo-Ra. Jim |

Re: For a 302 conversion - pro/con of headers out the wheel well?
I found that the blockhugggers were ok for my original Rover 215 engine. Having said that the engine revved quicker when I dropped the exhaust and crossover section to leave both pipes blowing down either side of the engine at the track. Then i fitted the 4.6 litre engine with stainless steel RV8 style headers that came out of the inner wings. I did cut these back in the collector so I could fit 3" pipes either side and then fitted some shop bought bends to give me a 3" pipe either side which came out just behind the front wheels. This worked very well for my nitrous motor. Then I added a 4/72 blower and dropped the nitrous from a 275 shot down to a 175 shot for charge cooling + a bit of extra power. This also worked well but in the end I made a set of Zoomies for the engine and have stuck with those ever since as I re worked that engine out to 4.9 litres / 299ci.
My car is of course a teack only car as it does not see road use these days. I' I am only intetested in 1/4 mile these days. |
