Oil pan (sump) interference
Hello all!
I have finally started on my V6 project! Since I have owned it for almost 5 years, I thought maybe it was time to start working on it. A little background: This is a 1973 MGB roadster that, according to the guy I bought it from, previously had a 2.8L V6 and 700R4 installed. When I bought this car it was in an unfinished state, but came with a new 3.4L GM crate engine, never installed. I have chosen to use the 700R4 as I complete the build. I am using the early CCE motor mounts (Thanks Jim Watson!), and will be fabricating a transmission crossmember. Todays Problem: Clearance for the automatic seems to be adequate; however, with the engine lined up front to back and side to side, the engine oil pan hits the crossmember while the upper and lower motor mounts are still about 1" to 1-1/2" too far apart. In searching this site and others, I see 3.4 installs where the oil pan is comfortably behind the crossmember. Are there different oil pans, or do I maybe have something fouled up? pictures will help. what did the 3.4 come from? what was it built to go in? is it carb. or FI?

Charles; No pictures yet. The 3.4 is a new GM crate engine. Motor mounts are installed correctly, according to pictures Brian McCullough has posted in the past. Crossmember to frame mounting pads are new black polyurethane. I am unable to lower the engine into position because the oil pan hits the crossmember, leaving 2.5" to 3.5" or so between upper and lower motor mounts. The motor mount "cushions" are only about 1.25" to 1.5" thick. Engine is carb. |

Do you have the engine and trans level in the car. If the trans is hanging low my engine will not reach the mounts. I put a Jack under the trans and Jack it up into position.

Thanks Steve. The transmission is as high in the rear as the current tunnel mods allow. I'll probably have to address that.
