Range Rover 4.6 into MGB problem
First time posting here. Would really appreciate any experience or ideas anyone might have on this:
Some years ago I put a 3.5 from a TR8 into my MGB. I'm now swapping the 3.5 for a 4.6 from a 1999 Range Rover HSE. I've had some difficulties in/around the timing cover. Solved a few problems, but still have one or two, most notably, I've got a: Main bearing cap bolt -- oil pump problem. The bolt sticks out of the block and interferes. Has anyone who's done a 4.6 conversion come across this? Any ideas how to get round it? |

Re: Range Rover 4.6 into MGB problem
Ross,
Are you using the 4.6l timing cover and oil pump? Most of us have changed to the Buick style setup. On the rear where the starter goes I did have an issue with one of the cross bolts. Needed to use the Allen head type and counter sink to hole in the block. But no issue at the front. Here is a photo of mine. Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 06/06/2016 12:25AM by mstemp. |

Re: Range Rover 4.6 into MGB problem
Go here to resize it.
[www.picresize.com] Change it to 600x???. Just put in the first value & let the program pick the other. That will retain the same aspect ratio. |
Re: Range Rover 4.6 into MGB problem
Thanks so much, Mike. No, the timing cover I've used I sourced from a wreckers, I think it's off a Discovery. Perhaps the Buick route will get this all solved. Where did you get Buick parts? What year/model of Buick am I looking for if I start hunting around for a Buick style set up and what all do I need? Timing cover, oil pump, … what else?
Thanks again for the help so far! |

Re: Range Rover 4.6 into MGB problem
Ross,
Looks like a simple matter of changing the oil filter remote take off plate. You already have a Rover or Buick timing cover and oil pump, its that remote filter plate that is causing the issue. D&D used to have an oil pump cover that allowed you to swivel the filter. It was two parts, the Buick "Metric" stamped oil filter flange and then a Caddy swivel I think. Worked very well in the MGB. Its what I have as do many others. Or if you must have a remote filter use a standard TransDapt version. Or remove the offending cross-bolt, drill/counter sink the hole and use an allen head bolt. The other side of the motor should have one installed at the rear already. You may also need to do similar on the RHS rear depending on what starter you use. Edited 3 time(s).
