Toyota trans for GM V6 pattern Jeep and Dakota 2.5 bellhousings

Alternate sources for bellhousings with stronger than T-5 trans.W58-Early Supra to Jeep 2.5 bellhousing.R154-Later Supra to Dakota 2.5 bellhousing. Those bellhousings have the GmV6 engine pattern with the Toyota trans pattern. The trans is in between the T-5 and Tremec in size and strength. The bellhousing pictures are Toyota, just wanted to show tranny patterns.

Yes, they will work with the W58 and R154, but, as in life, nothing is perfect.

Here is another option for the Dakota bellhousing. The newer Colorado/Canyon trans, the MA5.It is also in the Solstice/Ske sports cars with a rear mount shifter. It has the large Toyota pattern with Chev input and rear splines. It is not quite as robust as the Supra trans because it lacks the steel reinforcing rib. It is rated about the same as T5. Here is a picture of one next to a Muncie 4 speed. Ratios: 1=3.75,2=2.26,3=1.37,4=1.00,5=0.73

There is also a small block Ford adapter for large Toyota (AX15) at Advanced Adapters.

Greg, If you are the same Greg on the Jeeps-Offroad message board, I just stumbled on your data and thought it was very useful information. I also copied this thread over to the other popular MG Experience board. You ought to do an article for Curtis, kind of in depth like on the Jeep board. My smallblock Ford for my 73 Roadster project was originaly in my 55 Willys Wagon. It is a strange coincidence how so many MGB people are also Off-Road enthusiasts!

Hi Jim,
Yep, that's my work..or obsession.. or hobby. I put that info together starting in 03 and posted an expanded version on the Jeep Off Road site in 04. I actually sent an early version of the article to the British V8 Mag, but, I don't think it was geared in the right direction. The Jeep guys appear to love it however, and, over the years, the info has grown.

As for the Toyota W58 and R154 being used behind the 60 degree V6's. I've made some notes about that. You MUST use the Camaro\Firebird flywheel to make it work. It's thicker than the S10 versions and places the clutch disk back far enough to get full engagement on the short input shafts of those transmissons.

All in all, it's been fun.

Greg

Greg, great research and very useful, it is greatly appreciated.

Does the starter work with the bellhousing? meaning alignment, I guess it does, but just wanted to make sure.

What is your web page? and who makes the adapter for the Ford trans.

Again tahansk for the great information.
vr/Bill G.

I had a w58 and gave it away to a friend who put it in his tr6 and loves it. I found another one on craigslist last fall for $50 and its on a shelf waiting for a good use. Greg probably remembers that I was fixated on using the w58 behind my small block ford for awhile, he kinda helped me realize the t5 made a little more sense in that application. I keep thinking I'd like to do a cheap 2.8 with the w58 in my second gt that I'm doing rust repair on. Some day, maybe...

The w58 can be picked up cheap if you keep your eyes on craigslist or the u-pull-it. Lots of celicas and supras laying around. I'd also like to find a cheap r154 just to add to the collection.
