I want a new engine for my 76 Spit
I have a 76 spitfire 1500 and I need a little more... "oompf." Funds are limited at the moment but I have plenty of time. I am mechanically challenged but have plenty of good buddies who know a thing or two. Any ideas on what to put in the front end? please help

Re: I want a new engine for my 76 Spit
As a side note: I am 22 (next gen of spit lover). Had a 72 MG B in the past and hated to part with it. I am new to this forum and excited to learn about brit racing cars.

Re: I want a new engine for my 76 Spit
Saw a 2.3 Ford engine in one at Carlisle a couple of years back that fit pretty nicely in there. One small notch to the firewall/frame to get the (stock) headers through, otherwise it fit right in there. Afaik the engines aren't expensive either.

Hi Austin, I'm partial to 2.3 ford motors also. Check out my write up and David Stutz too. You will see that bonnet modification is required.

Re: I want a new engine for my 76 Spit
Found a cheap engine in a Toyota Celica that starts at 120 hp and we are going to super charge/turbo charge, stoke and boost to about 400 hp. have to replace the rear end and suspension... only thing left that is Spit might be the frame and body... maybe the wheels too... So many options. Thanks for your help

Re: I want a new engine for my 76 Spit
changed my mind about the celica engine... we found a suitable modification that is a little bit... different. We are put a GSXR 1000 motorcycle engine in the vehicle with an electric reverse... Its going to be quite the conversion... will put pics up as soon as i take em

Now that sounds like quite the set-up. Should be a ton of fun.

Re: I want a new engine for my 76 Spit
I had a GSX 750. Tons of hp but aren't you worried you will have no torque? Winding it out to 14K at stop lights might get old.

Re: I want a new engine for my 76 Spit
I'm planning a 302 in my TR6, but for the spitfire I would use the Ford 2.3L.

Re: I want a new engine for my 76 Spit
Just out of curiosity, did you consider the Toyota 4AGE out of the old rear drive Corolla? Searches online will find motors for as little as $400 and 5 speeds for them can be found almost everywhere. The motor itself is tiny and light and has potential for serious power, Atlantic Series cars used 250 NA versions and the little 1.6L will handle decent boost too. Just asking because that is my plan with my 79 Spit.

Am fitting a Toyota 1600 4AGE with T 50 to my Mk4 at the moment. Think it will be a sweet conversion.
