Rear axle - air breathing?
Posted by: Icekottarinn

Can anyone inform me if there is a "air breathing" on the Rear Axle (rear diff) in Spitfire Mk3?
If so (as I hope) where is it ? :)

It has a leak problem in my car and I just wanted to make sure it was "breathing"
- is there a common leak problem for this diff/rear axle? If so any good advices appreciated.

Thanks

Anyone?

Does this rear axle have a "breathing"?

On my TR6 differential there is a small cotter pin that fits loosely in a hole for breathing. Look for something similar on the top of your differential. You will most likely find it on the back half of the differential that is made out of cast aluminum.

Cheers

We've seen your post. I personally don't know, no sign of a vent in the manuals but I would think that it should have a vent to prevent lubricant blowing out the seals. I'll check with a friend of mine who has a Spitfire and let you know, might take a day or two though.

Thank you Byron, I did check this out, but it is not easy to see without removing the diff from its place. I will try again tomorrow when in the garage.

And thank you Bill for replying, I would appreciate the answer from your friend.
