Weight of the GT6 motor?

Hello, I'm new to this website. I recently acquired two GT6's, a '69 and a'72. Neither one runs at the moment. The 69 appears to be nearly complete, but has bad rust around the battery box and the passenger side floor. The 72' has a 1962 Buick 215 aluminum V8 with what appears to be a two-speed hydromatic transmission and an independent rear end of uncertain ancestry. (kind of looks cobbled together). The engine swap for the 72 was pretty sloppy (things not very well lined up, really cruddy welds, etc), and I'm debating whether to try to clean it up and run the Buick motor, or swap it out for something else. I would like to eventually race the '72 in autocross. Right now I race my Toyota MR2 Spyder, but it would be really satisfying to race a car that I had built myself. And then eventually make it street legal as well. I love the looks of the GT6 and would like to eventually show it.

So... can someone tell me what the weight of the stock 6-cylinder GT6 motor is? This will help me decide on whether to keep the Buick 215 (providing it is in good or rebuildable condition) or look for something else, and then what else would be satisfactory, preferably lighter as I've heard that the GT6's are a little nose-heavy.

I apologize if that data is already on the web site. I did some looking and didn't find it.

Thanks

Hi David,

Dan Masters has weighted his TR6 engine. He also has some other engine weight differences in his "How it was done article" just alittle bit down on his page. The TR6 engine is about the same weight at a GT6 engine, being the difference the head and crank.

Dan Masters page... [www.britishv8.org] TR6 engine 460lbs!

This should help you out.

Calvin

Thanks Calvin, and thanks for the link. From that information,it looks like the Buick 215 motor would be the lightest, and so, since I already have one, I will first try to use it. It looks like it is even quite a bit lighter than the TR6/GT6 motor, which should help with reported the nose-heavy handling.

Now I will need to find a manual transmission and bellhousing combination that will work with the Buick 215, as that seems to work much better automatics for autocrossing.

I haven't noticed anything on this website about swapping in some of the modern high-tech Japanese V6 and V8 dohc motors. It seems like there would be a lot of potential there, as they should be light and powerful and reve willingly? Just a thought in case the Buick 215 doesn?t work out.

From a web bases engine weights list, the GT6 engine weighs 401 lbs.

Cheers,
