Anyone using a RAM hydraulic clutch release bearing in their T5?
Im thinking of using this release bearing
[ramclutches.com] The master clutch cylinder needs to be at least 3/4 inch bore which is what the stock triumph is. Has anyone else used this kit with their T5? I have been using a custon external hydraulic clutch set up using a miata slave and the clutch is disengaging, but the pressure seems a bit much for the miata slave with its 5/8 bore and it is leaking past the seal. Other thoughts are to try and use a nissan 280z external slave with 11/16 bore. This was used on T5 that came with those cars back in the 80s I believe. I have to change the clutch bearing and the retainer and buying a nissan clutch slave will put me at almost half the price of the RAM kit so going that bit extra for the reliability might be the way to go. Thoughts? Thanks in advance. |

Most people who have not had exceptional experience with an HTOB are going with the external slave for maintenance reasons.

Interesting so which combination of master and slave did you use? Or did you buy one of the off the shelf units? Thanks.

Al, my car is an MG so it may or may not help but here.s a link:
[forum.britishv8.org] The slave is an Isuzu part available for $40 from Amazon. Dorman CS360032 Clutch Slave Cylinder. I forget the bore size but it's close to 3/4, you should be able to get that from the part number. The master is stock MGB which has a 3/4" bore. The clutch fork was shortened a little bit. Pedal pressure is very midrange. Jim |

Hello Jim . I'm glad you spoke up in favour of the external slave cylinder. So much easier to change it instead of pulling the whole trans to fix the internal one.

Jim Watson used a RAM HTOB. He no longer has the car, though.
IMO this internal/external slave is overblown. There are people out there that have good results either way. My dad's stock '63 B has an external slave, of course. We had to pull the engine & trans to replace the carbon TOB. So, pick your poison. On the other hand, my conversion turns 18 this Spring. I am still running the same McCleod HTOB without issue. |

Re: Anyone using a RAM hydraulic clutch release bearing in their T5?
I never had a bit of trouble with mine either, through a whole series of 215's but then I sold it when I thought I was going to the big automatic and as far as I know it's still doing fine. I have a better clutch feel with the external and it's lighter but that could just be from the overall ratio. Which is a little easier to tune with the external maybe as you can change the bore at both ends. Never had a leak but I know plenty who have. External, that is easy to fix whatever the cause, and they vary from improper setup (probably the most common) to nicked seals, bad seal/fluid combination, burrs, etc.
I do know if your transmission is not set up for the GM factory type HTOB it's probably best to stay away from that one. The unit itself seems attractive because it is cheap and used in production but by the time you are done you'll wish you'd done it differently, and may still have to. Jim |

Re: Anyone using a RAM hydraulic clutch release bearing in their T5?
Jim just wondering if your transmission was originally a cable type clutch fork that you substitued wih a hydraulic clutch fork when you did the conversion? Thanks.

Re: Anyone using a RAM hydraulic clutch release bearing in their T5?
Al, my tranny is a clutch fork type. Bell is also, I modded it for a reverse fork (cable type) and added a slave mount using the S10 fork which I had to mod quite a bit. Since then I've bought a couple cable type bells and will convert one to a slave mount to go in later.
For anybody buying a BOP (V6 Buick) cable bell, be sure you get the clutch fork and preferably the tin cover too. The cover you can make but the fork is unobtainium and I don't know of one that is a direct fit without being modded. The S-10 fork can be made to work if you have a hydraulic press but it is a bit complicated. Jim |

82-84 S10 had a cable clutch too. The S10 fork may be the same as the non- cable though.

Re: Anyone using a RAM hydraulic clutch release bearing in their T5?
Okay i already have a 93 mustang cable type clitch fork v8 t5 bell housing that I modified similarily to yours. I asked Late model restorations (fox body mustang specialists) about substituting a 2002 mustang hydraulic clutch-fork for the cable clutch fork but they noted that the geometry would be wrong unless the bell housing was a T56 or similar bell housing. Ill try the iszuzu and nissan slave to see which one works best. If neither is satifactory i will go with the RAM hydraulic thow oit bearing. Cheers
