Power assist brake servo is toast except for stock is anything a straight drop in?
As stated the TR6 brake booster is toast. I can hear swishing sound when pressing the brake pedal plus when i depress the brake pedal before starting there is no slight drop in the pedal once the engine starts. Any aftermaket stuff that is close to a straight drop in or just replace with stock? Thoughts

Making a swooshing sound when you press the pedal just means the sound deadening bit around the pedal rod is gone usually. Also if the pedal doesn't go down more when the engine starts doesn't that mean it retained enough vacuum that the brakes were already applied?

Pretty sure it is the brake booster. Change in the engine rpm and in the vacum gauge when i push the brake pedal along with the hissing whooshing sound when pressing the brake peadal all point to the booster. The check valve on the booster is fine. So i figure the internal booster membrane is hooped. Replacement is a bit pricey but the local british parts guy has a booster in stock. Better safe than sorry.

Just one check. If you turn off the engine and wait a bit, then push the pedal does it still make that whooshing noise? If it does, how many times will it do it before it stops?
OTOH if you like fixing unbroken things, why not? Jim |

Whoosing sound never goes away after each compression on the brake after starting shutting down and waiting. Wooshing gets louder and is constant now after starting the car and depressing the brake pedal when i hold it.

Re: Power assist brake servo is toast except for stock is anything a straight drop in?
So far that sounds pretty good, brakes still work like they should?
The real question is, can you shut 'er down without touching the brakes, go away for a cup of coffee or overnight, and when you step on the brakes it still acts the same? Because if it does the only real complaint you have is the noise, right? That'd mean the vacuum is holding just fine. And if it isn't, the first place to look is the check valve and grommet where the vacuum line comes in, not the servo. The diaphragms rarely go bad, it's really amazing how long they last without deteriorating. Now about that whooshing noise: When the pedal is pressed the rod opens a valve that releases vacuum past a sound dampener/filter donut around the rod and into the cabin of the car. The air that rushes into the back side of the booster then pushes the diaphragm towards the master cylinder. So if you are hearing that whooshing noise, all that means is that the booster is working correctly but that the filter/dampener has deteriorated. Which they do. It's nothing but a foam donut, and not hard to replace. But it'll work fine without it. Jim |

Actually the braking was poor. as well. I pulled the old booster and there is all kinds of corrosion inside where the master cylinder attaches. The one way check valve is working fine. I took out the master side pushrod seal/rubber grommet and inside the booster there is a shiny black brown fluid inside when i shine the flashlight inside. Hmm looks a bit concerning. Is it okay for some moisture inside? Thanks for all the info.

Brown fluid... at some point the master has been leaking into the servo. Given that brake fluid is hygroscopic, that encourages internal corrosion.
For the cost, you may as well replace it. Then if the braking is still poor, at least you will have eliminated the servo. Ivor |

Yup went ahead and replaced the booster with stock braking is fine and solid now.
