So I'm looking at a TR8 wondering if an LS1/T56 combo will fit in without cutting.
Anyone try this?
Pitfalls or gotchas?

I have an LS1 lying around looking for a home...

I bet it will. A Toyota UZ V8 will go and it has overhead cams.

It's almost exactly the same length and width. I remember that from the last time I had this dumb idea. Gearlever falls in about the right spot too.

The dimensions I didn't check were height and the width of the tranny tunnel, and neither car nor engine are at home right now, hence my question.

Chevy small block 427 dart block destroked to 383 with a T56.......no hacking and if it had the stock front strut towers the engine still would fit.....so no issues with the LS series engine and T56.

Mike or anybody? I'm building a Stg II V6 Buick for my Huffaker TR 8/GT-1 car. 450-500hp. I need a suitable 5spd/od. for same. Road racing and track days only.Plan is to use the incumbent Huff' prepared rear,(3.90's,spool and full float axles), may need a cooler on it.10" treadx 23" dia.road race slicks=not too much shock load.Suggestions ? roverman.

Cheapest easiest route would be a beefed Tremec T5 variant behind a BOP bell housing and a hydraulic throw out. Add a custom driveshaft and your good. I have a couple of the bell housings and might even have a V6 flywheel kicking around if you need them, but a car like that deserves shiny new light weight pieces.

Todd and clan, Why not a T5z? This car will produce a little more "shock loading" at the rear tires, than a Scwinn bike ? If Tremic, which one ? Thanks, roverman.

The T5Z is the tranny that came in the 93 and up Cobra Mustangs. I believe it had the highest torque ratings of any of the T5s built by Borg Warner. It was rated for 450 HP and 330 torque over a 100,000 life span. Since Tremec bought the rights to the T5, there are even more robust versions now. The ultimate being the TKO line, which is designed for racing and can be purchased with multiple shifter positions, gear ratios, and cross member mounting tabs. They are rated for 5 to 600 foot pounds of torque over a life span of 100,000 miles. If you have T5z laying around, go for it. Not sure what you will need to do to get the shifter position you will need, but probably not a big deal. Most likely involves a different rear section from a GM/Camaro based T5. The T5 was available in over 200 different cars, the first one oddly enough was an AMC Concord or something crazy like that.

The TKO series are NOT T-5 based. They are an overdrive version of the old Ford toploader transmission and parts do not interchange with the TKO series. Tremec, the manufacturer of the TKO line, also took over Borg Warner's manual transmission line, including the T-5, T-45 and T-56. There are aftermarket upgrades for nearly all the parts in a T5 including the case and gear sets. A friend ran one in a '93 Mustang Cora drag car into the 9's in the 1/4 mile before switching to the TKO. His T5 had all the goodies from G-Force.
