T5 shifter relocation.
Posted by: mypenname

I just finished modifying the tail housing of my T5 Transmission to allow the shifter to be located in the TR6 factory location.

I made a coupling and housing that will allow a standard factory or aftermarket shifter to be used.

I made a coupling so that it will drive the original shifter selector so I will not need to modify with the selector gate.
Finished the housing and welded it into place and installed the shifter. The Camaro t5 is tilted at an 18 degrees so I made the new shifter sit level.

What does the ball on the bottom of the shift handle connect to?

Once I had everthing lined up I cut the section of shaft out between the coupling opening to allow the shifter ball to fit into the socket of the coupling.

You know, Jeep had a shifter coming out the top cover also, It kind of reminds me of the Tremec 6 speed with multiple shifter positions. You know if you used a S-10 tailshaft housing it would be pretty close to your mod.

The S10 is to far forward at 11-1/2"and the 98 Camaro is to far back at 19-1/2" so I made mine to be in the middle at 15" where I needed it :)

I admire people who can do stuff. I especially admire people who can do clever stuff. Well done, Mark!

There is one issue you should address before you put it into service. You've probably already considered it. Your box should be sealed to the tranny case since it isn't fully welded around the perimeter, to avoid having a leak. It probably won't be much, but little seeps do add up.

That is a good point Jim, I did run a small bead of RTV inside the shaft tubes where it meets the housing before I reinstalled the tail housing.

Love your solution. Is there any reason why you didn't just slice of the original shifter boss then perform the same cut you did for the welded part, and use the original piece in it's place? It would mean not having to fabricate the milled piece and creating a simple plate to cover the old opening.

Mark, your idea is brilliant. I have a '75 Stag that I'm doing the Ford 302 and Ford T5 thing to. If you or anyone else has experience with this swap, am I going to need to move the shifter to have the stick in the right position to come through the hole in the tunnel? Thanks!

Just to think of that is impressive. To actually do it, well...

Transparent transmission cover required :}
