Re: New to the gallery: Jon Cook's LS1 powered GT6!
I have been waiting to see this build in the gallery. Nice looking GT6 and well done Jon. It must be a blast to drive.Jon was the only one that figured out how to deal with the Reverse Lock out with the T56 trans. The lock out will still function, but resulting in removing that huge solenoid that would stick out. I was able to do the mod to my T56 and it works great. It keeps your trans tunnel small in that area without the solinoid sticking out right where your knee would be.

Well done Jon. Good to see your car on the road.
Here's a link to Jon's web page that I've been following since 2008: [www.ls1gt6.com] |
Re: New to the gallery: Jon Cook's LS1 powered GT6!
Well. That's awesome.
Seriously, the cars I see being built just keep getting better all the time. That car is so clean and simple looking, I've never been a big fan of the Spitfire/GT6, but this car is amazing. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/10/2014 10:26AM by mgbreis. |

Thanks everybody for the kind words. It's been a long and interesting build.
It's been fun though and talked with some nice people along the way, several have posted above already :) If anybody has any questions about the car let me know, I can't wait till spring to get the car out more and have some fun. |

Damn! Another car to add to the bucket list.
Sweet looking ride Jon. Must go like the clappers!! I like it a lot. Any shots of the hood? Mods to clear the engine. Cheers Fred |

Re: New to the gallery: Jon Cook's LS1 powered GT6!
the hood is all stock, the goal of the project was to get the engine in under the bonnet without bonnet mods, had to modify the cross member, frame, steering, etc to get the engine to sit low enough. I have two tiny points of contact with my fuel rails and bonnet under hard acceleration, but there's not much I can do about that at this point.

Glad you got it all under the hood - always worth the extra effort. Do you have more pictures somewhere showing more details of the build?

Jon your car is a fine piece of work!!
I have one question concerning the reinforcement of the frame. Are you finding that the roll cage provides enough rigidity to the GT6 frame to handle all the torque that the engine puts out? Cheers Byron |

Excellent work Jon!
I really like what you did with the coils on the valve covers. How did you accomplish this? Regards Scott |

Re: New to the gallery: Jon Cook's LS1 powered GT6!
The valve covers are as cast Holley covers, I had to upgrade to Ls2 style coils to get the spacing right, but the newer style coils are supposed to be better and more reliable than the stock Ls1 style. New coil harnesses to plug the new coils and ARP bolts ($$) to complete the conversion.

Re: New to the gallery: Jon Cook's LS1 powered GT6!
WOW Jon that is one awesome looking GT6. My spitfire only had the GT6 suspension parts under it. I would love to find a GT6 body and bolt it onto my frame and do a race car with it. This way I would have a roof and windshield when I race. I don't have that now and when it rains I hate being on the track with it. Keep up the good work

Re: New to the gallery: Jon Cook's LS1 powered GT6!
performance update!
got the car tuned, found out I was running on 5 out of 8 cylinders due to spark plug wires arcing through two sets of boots to my headers, the car is totally different now! went to the drag strip over the weekend, couldn't get traction in 1st gear and had troubles in 2nd as well, but laid down a couple 12.5 sec passes at 117. I think a set of drag radials would get me close to 11s had a great time, everyone seems to love the car |
