Bump steer on 76 Spitfire
Hi guys ... been a while. My Miata-engine-in-a-Spitfire debacle continues. Car is up and running and needs a few tweaks before it's roadable. Apparently there's a potential issue with bump steer and my mechanic is wondering what the specs are, specifically the margin of error. Thing is, he had to lower the rack by 3/4" to clear the crank pulley, which obviously affected the geometry. He says he's got it pretty close but doesn't want to sign off on it until he's confident he's got it within specs. Anyone have those specs handy?

Jeff, It's not perfect but, if the tie rods are in the same plane/parallel with the lower control arms at road height you will minimize bump steer.

True correction also requires shortening the rack.
That requires welding skills or paying a certified welder. Lucky for me I have a spare in case the first try fails. Look at your angles at full lock to see why there is an issue. This is well enough known I'm a little surprised no one offers corrected steering racks on an exchange basis. |
