TR4a front suspension upgrade?
Posted by: Richard/SIA

So I just bought my "last" car.
Dio Tipo 61 on a TR4a chassis.

As I recall the TR front suspension is not great.
Anyone have an easy upgrade?

It's exactly the same as a TR6, if that helps.

Seems the easiest way to get what I want may be to make new 4 x 108mm hubs.
To that end I need a TR hub to copy.
Need not be a good one, just good enough to take measurements from.
If I'm doing all that I may as well make them in alloy too.

Hi Richard. Just curious but what is wrong with the TR4/6 suspension and what do you plan to replace it with? Tim

The TR6 rear suspension gets a lot of stick, ditto the diff mounts and the flimsy chassis, but I never heard of anyone unhappy with the front setup. TR6 alloy hubs are available.

What do you have in mind?

Ivor

Since my TR engine and trans were stolen from my storage by scrap thieves a while back it looks like I will be using a warmed up Buick 225 V6 and T5.

Front suspension is probably not THAT bad but I will want to do something about the rear frame lifting the inside wheel on cornering.
Not sure I can put enough anti-sway bar on it without just having a solid rear suspension.

Body mounting will create a space-frame structure over the original rails so chassis should be plenty stiff.
These are often build with SBF/SBC in the TR chassis so my puny little Buick should not strain anything except perhaps the rear axle.
I have a Buick Apollo axle with LSD I might be able to re-drill for the correct wheel PCD.

If you hang on to "Junk" long enough it will eventually turn out to be useful.

If your lifting a rear wheel you need to stiffen the front bar

I am cutting the weight by half so the axle is sitting on the frame even with no corner load.

Now thinking to use my Alfa engine and to adapt the Alfa axle.

Hello Greg. Things got posted in the wrong spot . My mistake, forgot to let my nephew know. Picture one shows clearance with TR6 wheel . Picture two shows 4a lever arm with almost zero clearance between arm and vertical upright . I used nuts and washers to make the spacers shorted than stock . Picture three is the 4a lever with stock spacers. Picture four is with the TR3 arm swapped over to the passenger side..Picture one and two go together so evan when the arm is very close the toe in ball joint doesn;t hit the rim . let me know what you think.Tim
