Appraiser Needed

Hey all,

Just bought a 1954 Healey Beast. Need to insure but the insurance wants an appraisal for the stated value. Can anyone provide an appraiser in the North Alabama area that has the expertise and knowledge to correctly appraise the value of my Nasty Boy?? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ed, I can't help you with a local appraiser, but double check the policy type being offered. You really don't want Stated Value. What you want is Agreed Value. Google "agreed value vs stated value auto insurance" and you'll see why. They are hugely different.

I looked in eBay to see if there were any Trade sellers of Healeys near you.... there were 172 cars in current and completed auctions, but none of them were even in your State.
Guess you need to try Classic car vendors in general.

Luckily over here unless one is stretching the value envelope, insurers only require pictures to support one's own valuation.
I'm with Hagerty for my classic Yank.

Great looking car. I use Hagerty as well for my V8 Healey. They let you determine your own value and only need to send pictures with your application. Much easier than trying to find an appraiser that knows Nasty Boys.

I googled "appraisers for classic cars and hot rods in Houston" and got several hits. Might try the same for your area.

I am just north in TN. I have been using Grundy 15 years and never needed an appraiser, just photos.

Like the other guys have mentioned, big difference, "stated" and "agreed on".

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the input. The insurance we are using, American National, has reasonable rates and was recommended by a friend here locally. Their policy is to have a written quote from a certified appraiser. We did manage to find someone locally that provided the estimate at a very reasonable cost. Our need for an appraiser is complete. All that you have told me is good info that I will keep in mind for the future. Have a great day and looking forward to seeing those attending the Townsend gathering.

American National as in ANPAC? That's who I use. On my MG, they did not require an appraisal up to $25k agreed value. Instead, they relied on interior, exterior, and engine bay pictures. I'm guessing your Healey has a higher value, but surprised they don't also have a higher threshold for it since Healey's generally command more than B's in any condition.
