OIl Capacity 3.9L Rover V8
I've been driving my V8 for about 3 years - bought the short block new from RPI Engr (UK), and the dip stick and oil sump came from a BOP 215. So my question is - what is the correct oil capacity?

Do you have a remote filter? How big? Do you have an oil cooler?
The original Buick and Olds manuals list capacity at 5 quarts assuming you change filters, and 4 quarts assuming you don't. Those cars didn't have oil coolers. I have a somewhat smaller-than-stock filter on my Buick 215, but it's not remotely mounted (and I don't have an oil cooler). I usually put in about 4.5 quarts. After pouring the fourth quart, I go by the Buick dipstick. For the production MGB GT V8 model, MG listed the capacity at 4.54 litres and that converts to 4.80 U.S. quarts - which doesn't seem like enough since that model had both an oil filter and a remote filter (but I don't know how big MG's oil pan was). The Range Rover oil pans (at least 4.0 and 4.6...) seem REALLY deep, so I'd disregard Range Rover numbers. |

Providing you have the matching dipstick and sump the reading on the dipstick should be accurate, somewhere in the region of 5 litres should fill it.

I do have a remote filter - I don't have an oil cooler. Pan and Dipstick did come from same BOP 215 engine - I'll pay attention to that. Looks like it should be close to 5 quarts. Thanks for the help!
