BMW Rearend for TR6
Posted by: BWA

I am getting close to putting my TR6 with a Gm 3400 v6 engine on the road. The engine will be good for 215 hp and 215 ft/lbs of torque. Initially I thought that I would go with the original rearend and see how it handles the increase in power. I have looked into the possibility of going with an R200 differential if my TR6 diff bit the big one. Being that I live in western Canada the cost of buying and shipping a diff, diff kit, axels and a driveshaft from Richard Good is very expensive. I have tried to find the r200 diff locally and all I can find is a car that may be for sale but it has about 150000 miles on it so the diff may be on its last legs. So I am looking at my options and I am thinking that a BMW diff and axel shafts may do the trick. I found a real good website that has all the BMW models listed and the rearend ratios and one that looks decent is the BMW 318i and the rearend ratio is 3.45:1 which would be excellent for low rpm cruising. The good thing about the BMW is that you can find a lot more of these cars when you do a search. I can pick one up here in Calgary and it has low mileage.
So I am looking to the collective knowledge of this forum for suggestions.
Thanks for your time and consideration!

Cheers
Byron

Byron,

Can you have Richard Good send you parts to a northern US state by a border city. Could you drive over the border to pick it up for less? Also it would be less if on the paperwork stating "Parts for an Antique Car" going into Canada?

I have looked at that option and after you factor in the cost of gasoline to drive to Great Falls Montana which is 320 miles one way the saving is marginal. No matter how you slice it the freight costs are anywhere from $780.00 to $860.00 (CDN $'s) depending on the freight company you use. The whole thing less shipping is going to cost me $2852.00 (CDN $) so I figure that I could buy something local and pay my machinist friend to help me modify it to fit the TR6 for a lot less money.

Cheers

Have you looked at any diffs from the Inifiniti g35? I was looking at my 08 g35 AWD diff yesterday and it might work and be more available. The rear CV shafts also look very close to the CV shafts that I bought from Goodparts.

Byron, Since you and Fred Key are practically neighbors, might "pm" him ? He's "bound" to be returned from his alien abduction, soon ? Could your consider RX 7, for diff modular assembly unit ? Good Luck, roverman.

Mark I did a search on the Infiniti G35 and 37 with a car part search engine and nothing shows up here in Canada. I suspect that few of these cars are going to the wrecking yards.
Roverman I will check out your idea of the RX7 diff. I will also look into the possibility of a rear diff out of a Suburu WRX STI. These units should be pretty tough. I am building a spreadsheet for BmW diffs also.
Sooner or later Richard Good is going to run out of R200 diffs as many of them will have too many miles on them and he will be facing the high cost of shipping them to his shop to modify them. If I was him I would be looking for suitable alternatives.

cheers
Byron

90-96 Q45 R200 is a very nice choice, viscous LSD and 3.54 ratio. Aproximately 8" ring gear. I have a 300ZX R230 (9") with 3.69 and viscous LSD that I would sell for $200. Much bigger and unnecessary for the V6. For a high power V8 would be perfect.
