Re: New type Locker/Limited Slip
Quote: Sorry guys, I'm having a hard time keeping up with all the activity around here. Here's another company that makes limited slip differentials for the MGB. They're not a low-cost option, but if someone were determined to keep their Salisbury and they didn't want a Quaife... I know a couple people who are using Tran X differentials in smaller race cars such as MG Midgets. Tran X plate type LSD for the MG Salisbury axle. (Read the fine print. The title says "MGC", but the fine print clarifies that they work for MGB too.) This page explains the theory of operation. Notice that these are adjustable, and can also be bought for MGB with four different initial settings. |

Re: New type Locker/Limited Slip
You're right Curtis, at $1240 + shipping to the USA, that is definitely not a low-cost option. I'm pretty sure I could build a Chevy or Ford rear for less than that.
I was hoping we might stumble upon something reasonable that would work in the Salisbury. |

Com'n folks, We know how this works. Feed us some "dimensions". What's the "diff"? Then we scrounge. roverman.

Re: New type Locker/Limited Slip
Just as another thing to throw into the mix, I use a mid 80s Toyota Celica LSD axle, the shafts are bigger than 8" fords, and IIRC the outer bearings are the same too, possibly the Toyota PCD is the same as MG, Supposedly good for 600hp on slicks, mine has never let me down and its ad PLENTY of abuse

Re: New type Locker/Limited Slip
I'll call Randy's Ring and Pinion Monday to see if the locker idea is feasable.$300 is about average price.

Randy's referred me to Richmond Gear(Lock-Rite) tech line. I left a message and haven't heard back yet.

Re: New type Locker/Limited Slip
On related news, I contacted Moser on the feasability of one piece axles like they do for Jeeps. They said they would need an axle to look at and expected the price to be $345 a pair. Now that sounds like a deal to me! If this locker idea works (I'm thinking Dana 35 as it is closer to the same size)the next thing would be a 3.31 ring and pinion supplier.

Re: New type Locker/Limited Slip
D-35 should be awfully close, and with the Moser axles matching the splines will be no problem. Plenty of posi and gear choices available for those I think. There is a pretty good range of bearings available also. I have the Timken bearing selection software and also a bearing interchange manual so let me know the mesurements and I can see what bearings will work.

Re: New type Locker/Limited Slip
Jim, I was still using the MGB gears, just replacing the spider gears with the 4X4 locker. The AMC 20 rear has the same splines as MGB so; those side gear plates with the Dana 35 Lock-rite in MGB case. The Moser axles would be 29 spline also; so direct swap for MGB.I was going to contact Yukon and U.S. Gear to see if they could manufacture a new MGB ring and pinion in 3.31 ratio.

Seems like someone was working on that... D44 adaptation or something maybe?

Re: New type Locker/Limited Slip
So the later MGB use a Salisbury diff do they not? Been years since I had my MGB diff apart, how many splines do the axles have? Looks like 25 based on web but......
I found this while reviewing Perry's 9" spool into an MGB diff. Its for a Land Rover 1985 and older with 24 spline axles. [www.drivetrainshop.com] Any chance this has any potential? Mike Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 05/01/2015 03:49PM by mstemp. |
