Starter Question
Posted by: cobralee1

I have a 215 Buick in my Sunbeam with a T5 transmission. I need to replace the starter...I've not yet pulled it out but wondered if anyone on the forum has the same combination engine/trans and can tell me what starter they are using or would fit.

Thanks,
Ron

Welcome to BritishV8, Lee!

I have a Buick 215, with a big old Buick (Delco-Remy) starter in my MGB. It's been trouble-free since 1963... I doubt any aftermarket starter would be more reliable. Just in case it ever fails, I picked up a spare (used/original) starter 20+ years ago. Lately though, I've been thinking more and more about swapping to an aftermarket "high torque" (gear reduction) mini starter to achieve a significant weight reduction. Here's a link to a previous thread where John Hershall described buying a Rover-spec mini starter at low cost from Rock Auto and modifying its slightly too large nose to fit his Buick 215. I intend to do exactly the same thing:

Starters for Buick 215: [forum.britishv8.org]

Your T5 manual transmission shouldn't effect starter fitment. The mini starter may however give you more clearance for headers (etc.)

Thanks for the information. I ended up talking to D&D Fabrications and they're sending me one. It's a high torque mini starter so should work.

Make sure the spacing is correct so it fully engages with the flywheel. Don't just assume.
