Ford 302 distributor with 7-1 cam position sensor in it?
Apparently I need one for the Edelbrock Pro Flo system. Would prefer to get an OEM distributor rather than the Mallory unit Edelbrock originally included with the kits.

No one, eh?
How about a follow up question... Anyone know if the small cap can be used on a 1990 Mustang TFI type distributor? |
Re: Ford 302 distributor with 7-1 cam position sensor in it?
Rob, I remember seeing something like that and I'll look to see if I can find out what the application was, but, as I'm sure you know, the reason for the large cap was to prevent arc-over between the posts in the cap.
Going from memory, the large cap was actually fitted with an adapter and a smaller cap could be found to fit the body of the TFI distributor. Paul |

Re: Ford 302 distributor with 7-1 cam position sensor in it?
Thanks. I know they went to the larger cap to prevent cross over but i've been runnimg a small cap with no issues. I need the small cap to clear my drop based air cleaner.
Since Dan's car has Edelbrock's Pro Flo on it and I recall Ted saying he had to modify the air cleaner, I'm wondering if he did that to clear a big cap distributor. |

Rob, AMC or International had the small cap with stud type terminals for HEI wires. Go to NAPA and get one with brass terminals with matching rotor.

Re: Ford 302 distributor with 7-1 cam position sensor in it?
Jim - finding small caps isn't a problem. The problem I have is finding a small cap that will work on the later TFI distributors (e.g. 1990 Mustang) that are designed for the big cap style. They are made where the small diameter to large diameter cap adapter screws down to the distributor. The adapter then has the clips on it that hold the large cap on. There are no clips on the distributor body and no provisions to add them. I was hoping to find a screw down small cap but so far no dice.

I'm going to call UPR to be sure, but from that and several other threads I found, it appears they only did a limited run of their adapters and aren't making them any more.

Rob, Yeah, but the guy ordered the red MSD #8431 cap (84313 in black) and used the 4 cylinder rotor and it worked. Sounds like the newer MSD cap doesn't need an extra adapter.

Re: Ford 302 distributor with 7-1 cam position sensor in it?
Great info Jim, thanks! I've read the threads a few times, but am still not sure whether the MSD cap fits directly or needs the adapter. I'm getting the cap and distributor so I can try it. If that doesn't work I have a buddy with a CNC router that can do aliminum so can probably get an adapter made with the diagram in the above thread.

Haven't bought it yet... put it on my Christmas wish list ;). Wife always gets frustrated when I buy something close to Christmas and then have no ideas for a gift.

Hey Rob,
Will your car be ready for Dayton? :) Sounds like you're doing a major update. Hope you've been well. |

It'll be ready. No way I'm missing it. My folks are planning to come too (my dad got his undergrad degree from Univ. of Dayton so it's a chance for he & my mom to visit their old stomping grounds). May have to trailer the MG for the first time though as they want to rent an RV & go up together.
