Need an Automatic in your LBC/ ETC. ?

Not all of us, can shift too good, or want to, anymore. I'm pressing forward with the Aisin/Warner 30/40 OD. auto. For several reasons, I prefer it. Available, detachable BH, conventional or electronic controls, narrow,(fits in most tunnels without chopping). It will take some enhancements for more torque/hp. It is NOT a drag-racing beast ! Will easily fit the compact Olds/Buicks with 2125's.
I will be casting BH's of 356 -T6 alum. They will be machined to fit this and the GM pattern 4/5 speed sticks,( Saginaw, Muncie and BW). Your thoughts ? Thanks, Art.

Definitely a place for a new bell maker. Watch the centerline and parallelism closely. If there was a way to match the BOP and Chevy pattern also it'd be much more versatile, even if it included guidelines for cutting away unused areas of the flange.

A complete kit is the only way to go. If you can do that you will sell them. But don't expect owners to add the missing pieces, they just aren't good at it. (ask me how I know) Maybe you could team up with a rebuilder.

Here's another consideration for anyone looking for something similar but without the Big V8 bolt patterns, the small V6 engines and I4 engines use what is known as the "Metric bolt pattern" on the engine side of the bellhosuing. This includes the GM 60 degree V6 such as the 2.8, 3.1 and 3.4L. This small bolt patten fits these engines and thus the automatics from these are a direct bolt on, no problems.

There are also companies that build adapter plates to use the small engine with the big bellhousing AND the other way around. This small bellhousing allows the bellhousing to fit easily in small tunnels. The 1968 and later MGB is almost a direct fit with very little alteration to the tunnel.

I believe the 200 metric or the turbo 350 in the early 1980's- one of those two. With or without lock up torque converters.

In the mid 1980s, the 700R4 was used in S10 and Camaro amongst others (Cable control)

In the mid 1990s, the 4L60-E Automatic was used. (Electronic)

The internals are interchangeable with the big V8 versions. The differences are the size of the torque converters and the size of the bellhousing.

There is also a choice of the later 1990's 4L60-E which had a starter pocket on the opposite side.

All that said, I am Very interested in more information on this. Can you upload photos of the automatic? Lay a yard stick next to it so we can guesstimate dimensions and see how wide it is from the top.
What is it out of?
More information Please! :-)
We're currently working on an automatic conversion and I would love to see what these are all about.

Discussed several years ago-here, Fred Key and I. Volvo for years Toyota rear drive, Saab ?, etc./etc. Bell housing size/shape is similar to old Trans-dapt, smoother with less hump, where it counts. Will take a 10.5" clutch., 10" convertor. OD. is 30%.

Brian, Another small narrow auto is Ford A4LD. Used behind 4 and 6 motors with removeable bell. I plan on the Jeep AW4. Very similar to the Toyota version of Art's choice.

What I found were that the Aisin automatics all had a narrow pan and would fit easily in the tunnel, unlike the GM and Ford offerings. (Jeep was using Aisin) Also, they all had the removable bellhousing, all the way up to the AA80E (8 speed) which did not. Early units were 4 speed with lock-up and manual controls, gradually moving to fully electronic. Not sure if Chrysler was using the Aisin or not, but there are plenty of them around. I have a nice 5 speed with low miles sitting on the shelf, along with the AA80E. Both electronic.

The Aisin used a round concentric pattern on the transmission side of the bell so it is easy to match. But the hole is considerably larger than that for a manual trans so an insert would be needed to use one bell for both.

Of the GM units, the 2004r has the best gear ratios by far. It also has a dual pattern, BOP and SBC. Never was available in the small GM pattern. It might fit the tunnel without bashing, depending on engine location, but will be very tight, making the linkage and line connections difficult because of the width of the pan. The others are worse in terms of fit. IIRC the early Aisin had pretty good gear ratios.

Jim

Should be easy to find pic's of the AW 3040L on craigslist. Popular trans, even in pre- electronic. Toyotas, Nissans, Volvo's. "E" in designation = Hz. Low mileage J.A.P. like 300ZX turbo cost $199 outright in CA.

Update: pan 10" X 17". Front of pump face,( where BH attaches), to front yoke, u-joint C/L with yoke all in, is 26.5". Appears slightly smaller in girth than a C4. These were also used in 300 turbo ZX and turbo Supra, Toyota/Nissan trucks, including 4WD.
