Stripped threads 4.0 head

I have been rebuilding a 4.0 engine from a 1996 Range Rover. I have been having some head gasket problems, and yesterday while installing the bolts, two of the long bolts stripped out the threads from the block.

My question is, what is the accepted way to repair this? I have read elsewhere that some use double helicoils, while others use something called Timesert. These look promising, but the kit for a Rover engine is, frankly, outrageously priced for a one time effort.

I have also read that helicoils can "back out" over time. Anyone had any trouble with this?

Timeserts are the way to go. I use them all the time to repair rover blocks. Get rid of the stretch bolts and use ARP studs.

You can save some money on TimeSerts by buying the pieces separately. As far as I can tell, the only benefit of the Rover-specific kit is a jig to help you maintain alignment while drilling and threading the holes. There’s probably a harbor-freight gizmo that will do the same thing for far less $.

I made a jig for installing thread inserts square to deck on engine blocks. With simple adapters, works great for drilling and tapping square to surface on many places. Anyone with a mill can make a similar one. If you like, I can probably send some pictures.

I did that too. Inserted double helicoils, and still had issues with pulling the threads out of the block. Eventually went to an iron block and that took care of it.
