Which T10 to pair with 215?
What model/code or marks should I be looking for to source a T10 that has gear ratios that match 215?
I do not want a T5 or else, just a T10. |

Spencer, I'm just curious as to your planning, what process led you to the T-10?
As a teen in the 60's, I heard about the T-10, but never had one. You are selecting a transmission of later vintage, are they common? Are you sure the lack of an overdrive top gear is desirable? Just to give you some information, I have a TR6 with a Ford Windsor 5.0. I have a Nissan R200 differential with 3.54 ratio, and a T-5 with 3.35 first gear and .68 fifth. My car is 2510#, and I think my first gear is a little low for around town driving. I would prefer a 2.95 first so I don't shift as soon. On the other hand, I appreciate the .68 overdrive, as it keeps the rpm and exhaust sound down when cruising. I use the overdrive fifth gear almost anytime I'm at a constant 2300 rpm or higher. With the larger engine, I still have enough "beans" to maintain speed. -Dennis |

Re: Which T10 to pair with 215?
The T10 has an external shifter and there is no room for it in the tunnel. When I did the original installation of the 215 in my car back in 1970 I used a T10 and had to cut out the tunnel to clear the linkage and it placed the shift lever way to the left next to my leg. The T10 also has no overdrive gear so you are stuck with either a very tall 1st gear or you are buzzing down the freeway at 3000 rpm. There is nothing about the T10 that makes it a better choice than a T5 other than strength but the 215 isn't going to break a T5.

Exactly.
T10 may have old school appeal, but it has no place in an MGB. Jim |

Re: Which T10 to pair with 215?
I had a Muncie M20 in my V8B for years. Mainly because good 5 speeds were not common back in the early 80's when I did the swap. I had to modify the tunnel slightly (BFH method) for the external linkage and it actually worked pretty good with the 3.23 geared rear end.
Having said that, I've been running a T5 since 2000 and would not go back to a 4 speed again. Just to many advantages to the T5. The only exception would be if I had a 60's muscle car that I wanted to keep stock. Even then I probably would consider upgrading it to a TKO 5 speed or even a T56 six speed. That being said, some info on T10's here [www.transmissionrepaircostguide.com] |
