BOPR oil filter bases

I'd suggest this thread could be made a "sticky".

I'll start this, anyone who has more info please add to it. The purpose of this thread is to show and identify all existing oil filter bases that can be used for the Rover V8, Buick 215, 300, V6 and other Buick V8 engines. I've got photos of three so I'll go first.

The first photo is of the "Metric" filter base as mounted on the Buick 340 in my '71 MGB. Note that the frame rails have been modified to accommodate a 32" wide crossflow radiater. Curtis has used one in his car by denting, and later notching his frame rail.

The second photo is the stock 215 base. With a forward enough engine position it is possible to fit the filter between the steering rack and swaybar with this mount, in which case a hood scoop or bulge is almost certainly required. The third photo shows me holding the 215 base up next to the Metric base on the engine.

The 4th photo shows a big block filter base. These are interchangeable with the small block parts. This one almost certainly came off a late 60's 400. In the 5th photo you can see that it positions the filter forward and down, likely interfering with the swaybar but there may be applications that could use it.

Metric base, as installed on my 71 MGB GT.
After just a little hammer work, there was plenty of clearance for a PF47 filter to spin-on/off.

Later, I decided to fit a Scirocco style radiator.
I cut/patched the frame, just forward of the oil filter, to keep the radiator under hood height.

Looking at that last photo, it might be worth trying one of the big block filter bases.

This is the setup that was on my Olds 215 engine - metric base with a D&D supplied swivel adapter.

Here's where my filter hits with the metric base. Trying to decide whether to go with the D&D swivel or notch the frame...

It may work with the right threads on bolt to motor or motor to bolt. You would use the Ford filter recommended for that adapter.

It looks like the GM GN swivel adapter is discontinued.. Part #966639. Is there another source available?

This looks quite a bit different than the one posted by Graham.. I wonder where you can source those?

It was found on 4.1 Cadillac V6 also, probably junkyard only.

Would this be the correct part number to make a remote mount?

Tony, Your pic is of the "Metric" V6 cover. On Adapting the Ford swivel adapter you would also have to look at the O ring location. Ford has 3/4"-16 thread, V6 "Metric" 18mm-1.5, 215,300,340 Buick V8 is 13/16"-16.

Later Rover front covers,(later then 76 known in the uk as SDi ) are in fact 3/4" unf,
I'll let the pics do the talking

If you have a later front, then the Ford part is a straight fit,

Bryan.. Would that also work on a later Buick V-6 cover and pump?

I'm sorry,but I don't know the thread on the v6 cover !
If you could check it,and it's 3/4 unf,I couldn't see a problem,
Looking at the centre bolt of the pump, someone good with a lathe could make one with what ever thread you'd need.

You're missing one filter base. Leyland P76 on the far left:

http://www.roversd1.nl/sd1web/tuning/v8motoren/013.jpg

http://www.roversd1.nl/sd1web/tuning/v8motoren/014.jpg

Points filter forward at an angle but brings it down farther.

I am resurecting this post. What is not answered is this. Does the Range Rover Oil pump base that Bryan Philips posted fit an earlier Rover or Buick front cover? It appears that it might. The pictures posted show that the Ford 90 adapter fits the oil pump base from those Rover V8s. Pictures also show the oil pump base installed on a Rover engine. Is the engine pictured installed in an MGB? Will the 90 adapter from Ford clear the pulleys and front sway bar? These questions went unanswered and unchallenged. Anyone know?
