Alternative RV8 pistons ?

Perhaps not original RV8 pistons ? Perhaps some Toyota 3.7" bore, V8 ?

I found Toyota pistons for the 2rz-fe 4-cylinder engine from early 1990s Tacomas. they’re a decent option if you’re using a larger combustion chamber head like Buick 300.

3.74” (95mm) diameter, 24mm pins (same as RV8). NPR makes a set of 4 for $80-ish, you can buy off-brands on eBay for less.

I have a set of 8 oversize pistons (95.5mm I think) if you want them.

Toyota 2RZ-FE? That engine was in production from 1995-2004 for the Tacoma.

Compression Height 1.398" / 35.5mm

Dave R brought up using Toyota pistons back in 2018.

Not zero deck, with that small dish, probably .030-.040 down. The stock size is .040 over Rover 4.0/4.6. Very inexpensive. I think Dave had 10 to 1 with the 300 heads.

Hard to believe it’s been 6(!) years!

The Covid pandemic didn’t do my project any favors. I have an RV8 block with the low-cost Chevy 305 top hat liners pressed in but not bored/honed, a set of tricked out 300 aluminum heads with oversized ferrea valves and z28 springs, a 4bbl 215 intake, a “fast road” 215 cam, an early Land Rover oil pan, and a few different front covers. Also a 4.6L rv8 crank, an aluminum flywheel, the Toyota pistons, and some lightweight piston pins. Sadly, they’re all collecting dust.

I am in desperate need of a machine shop to bore/hone/deck the block and dynamically balance the rotating mass, but that’s another topic…

I’ll dig up the specs I found for the factory 2rz-fe pistons, if I recall, the comp height was the same as the wiseco pistons above, but the dish was a bit smaller. From what I saw on the web, the Toyota guys like to turbo/supercharge their engines, and the stock 2rz pistons hold up pretty well when they do.

I’m reasonably confident that the piston/heads combo will work, but it seems every commercial machinist within 100 miles of me thinks I have two heads…

Dave, I believe the 215 intake manifold will be a restriction to those 300 heads. Though not the best design, the Offy single-plane will port easy to match the 300 heads.
