Been looking at Taurus fans on eBay & Craigslist. The ones folks seem to say are the best come from 93-95 3.8L cars. May be the same for a broader range; I haven't checked, but those are the years most often referenced on the boards I found. Anyway, looks like they go for about $50-60 plus about 25 to ship so $75-85.

Got to thinking and checked Rock Auto to see what new goes for. Was surprised to see about $85. But, then I noticed one of the options they had listed was a Hayden 3690 which Summit says is only about 1250 CFM and 11 amps. None of the others had specs. How do you know which are OEM spec and which have punier motors? Could call on Tuesday but was hoping to order this weekend.

Oh, and Houston only has one pick a part, run by LKQ. They get $45 for fans and they don't have 1/2 price days. They also don't maintain inventory on line.

Rob,

Back to your original question. I know that what I have here does not apply directly to you setup but it may provide some insight. This is the GM service info I have on the 3400 V6 I am working with. This setup has a low speed and high speed fan control. It uses the temperature sensor in the top of the block. There is no sensor in the radiator. The fans are controlled by the PCM.

Pressure cap: 15 psi
Thermostat open: 195°F
Fan low speed ON 223°F
Fan high speed ON 230°F
Engine shutdown 284°F

This setup also utilizes an oil cooler
.
I have been told that the higher operating temps are used to improve fuel economy.

The pick a part places I have been to have tons of the V6 Taurus cars and no shortage of the fans. If you have to pay $45 it is still cheaper than any of the aftermarket stuff that's out there. Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a ton of info I've collected on fans and how to wire them.
