Seized T56
Not in customs, run low on lube. Anyone rebuilt one of these ? I haven't pulled it yet. Should be a challenge, to pull apart. Thanks, roverman.

I had to take mine apart to install a shifter relocation kit. It took me about a week of evenings to get the job done. PM me your email address and I'll send you a pdf copy of a manual for doing the job. |

Re: Seized T56
Just my two bits.
These tranny's use needle bearings so a "soft seize" generally is survivable as it just jams a syncro. "Rocking it" from 1st to reverse will free it up with usually no harm done. You can pull it apart to check and freshen it up, or run it as is. If it won't unlock then a major overhaul is in store. If this is the case and it wasn't of some phenomenal historical significance, I would look for another one. Cheers Fred |

Re: Seized T56
Thanks Fred, I shall look up the pattern. Historical significance was former owners', bride to be, wasn't going to let him spend another penny, to fix. Symtom was,he was driving along the hiway, and it went into neutral. I suppose when it cooled somewhat, it seized. onward, roverman.

Re: Seized T56, and recovered
Great tip Fred ! You saved me 2.3 tons of work. I "massaged"/no hammer, the shifter into all 7 gears, after adding 3 quarts of atf. Then I ran motor and trans together, without driveshaft. Note, 5th and 6th really makes the tailshaft vibrate, without the slip-yoke in there ! Fred, next time, lunch is on me ! Onwards, roverman.

Ok, What is the preferred lube ? I have Type III synthetic, auto trans lube ? Thanks, roverman.

Re: Seized T56
Art,
If it's from a GM vehicle, the preferred lube is Manual Transmission Fluid GM part No. 88861800. Bill Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/11/2016 01:19AM by MG four six eight. |
